Vodacom explains 3G/HSDPA problems

@v3g, is this related to the mystery [auto] DNS assignments mentioned in the problems thread?

Was something changed on the network that all of a sudden the older version didn't work any more. Wasn't this tested? For if it was then at least 3g customers could have been forewarned. This is similar to the situation when vodacom suddenly introduced some kind of proxy to re-display web pages in a more friendly manner, which was just implemented and caused a huge amount of problems for businesses providing services where cell phone browsing was required. There seems to be a lack of quality / change control for system changes. Just my observations.

Yes, same problem.

What happened is that the old versions of VMC-lite had the DNS server setting for the 'Automatic APN setting' hard-coded in the actual program.

This server merrily worked for the last 2 years and no one was the wiser. On Monday this server (somewhere in Europe) was switched off and suddenly you could not do a DNS lookup. Result: A connection to the network but no browsing.

If you used the 'Manual APN' setting, VMC-lite would get it's DNS settings from the Vodacom network and it would work fine.

V3 has been out for quite a long time and we actually zero-rated the Vodacom download section so people can upgrade without incurring data costs a while ago.

When we eventually figured out what was going on, we got the European Vodafone network to turn their DNS servers back on, so everyone are fine now again.

But it makes sense to upgrade as soon as possible. Also, so you can create 3G-only profiles! :)

It's all nice and dandy to tell customers to upgrade to the latest VMC-lite, but what about people using Linux, like myself?

ive got an e272, using Vodafone Mobile connect Lite 9.3.0 ???????

what the hell kinda version numbering is this?

should I download the 3.2.1 for the E220 now ?

Yes, please install the latest version of VMC-lite on your Linux box. :)

If you (re-)read my posts and the one by MyBB linked above, you'll notice the problem only affected people using older versions of VMC-Lite.

Since you're (obviously) not one of them, you probably should not worry about it. ;)

uhhh...mine says "Vodafone Mobile connect Lite 9.3" as the title, and in the about box....

ive tried the 3.2.1 "real" lite version but also doesn't work...as you say

also, when i went back to 9.3, I kept getting a RAS 678 error all of the sudden, now back to 619. what's RAS 678?

V3G, do you have any info on whether the Tower is functioning in Kempton Park, specifically Norkem Park? The 082155 support lady said there were a couple of people in Kempton with the same problem...... but i'd rather hear it from you just to be safe.

if it's down, it's OK, but if it's not i gotta fix this pronto!

I just can't take these 27 kbs GPRS speeds any longer...please man...

It works 100% at my work in benoni, connected the very first time even!

i'm beggin you man...

"it is advised that all customers using VMC-Lite upgrade to Version 3 as soon as possible". The latest version is free to download from www.vodacom.co.za (Go to Services, click on Mobile Data and then on Downloads. Customers should download the VMC-Lite 3.2.1 version).

i think vodacom must take it a step further and recommend a competitor's working connection so that their clients can "click" "click" and "download" as prescribed, coz i dont see how they are going to do that with their internet-less-ness...

thanks for the help V3G, i guess i'll have to wait 33 minutes to speak to another clueless person asking me n00b questions, telling me to restart, etc...

What he's asking is: How are people supposed to download the latest VMC Lite when they can't connect to the internet using their 3G modem?

And the answer would of course be: Rather use MTN because they don't stuff things up this badly.

It's all nice and dandy to tell customers to upgrade to the latest VMC-lite, but what about people using Linux, like myself?

it shouldn't affect you, neither anybody else that are using the normal dial-up connection methods provided by windows. The problem as v3g explained was the old application was static, your ppp connection's dns should be dynamic. Thus all good :D

I'm having the exact same problems, but I'm using my phone as a modem...? Keep getting an sms saying that my issue has been resolved, on weekly basis... Can't get through on 155, flippun useless.
