New HD PVR coming

The big thing is the HDPVR software update...

Makes no difference what hardware its running on, Multichoice need to get their software stack sorted out since its pretty much the ONLY problem with the HDPVR...

Why don't they use software that's already working in some other markets, India, Australia, etc? They are using the same hardware ain't they? So why don't they have dogging problems like we do?

They can't just bolt on other software since it probably doesn't match up with the EPG they use, as well as the smartcard stuff etc etc etc....

MC wants to be unique, so they end up having unique problems. They are really special ...

The DSTV EPG is not based on international standards. They seem deliberately to have used their own version to try and frustrate people using 3rd party decoders. I believe that has caused some of the problems with their own hardware.

Are they developing the software in-house or have they outsourced it?

Alot of what MC use is not international standard..

and yeah, its developed inhouse ontop of the OpenTV middleware stack. (which is pretty decent actually, so all the blame can be placed squarely at MC's feet in terms of the problems)

and yet some people still fork out R2000 for a "brand new" decoder

They don't want to say why the are bringing out the new UEC decoder.
/speculation on
The new decoder will run other/better software or just perform better for whatever reason. If the public knows this they will wait for the new decoder and Multichoice will be stuck with lots of unsold PACE decoders...
/speculation off

Ok, from the horses mouth, and also since I know something about this issue...

The software stack (which is the problem) will be the same, no matter WHAT decoder hardware they use underneath it.... so your speculation is incorrect..

They're prob using the UEC decoder since the PACE is now more expensive.

Seems some of us inadvertently received an update today. The HD-PVR is a lot faster now.

Please post your S/W versions

Mine is as follows and still dog slow:

Code:
Appl SW: 1.14.1.97
OpenTV SW: CO20131
Midware SW: PVR1.7.12.61
Driver SW: 2.303

LMAO!!! and the UEC decoder is going to be better :D - The UK job sites have got contracting positions open for Set-top-box developers for 6 month contracts in SA!

Just hope its not the PACE people who apply

There have been relatively few complaints about the PACE HD PVR hardware.

The thing gets so hot that you can cook on it.
Oh well - at least I won't need a heater this winter:)
