Vodacom is proud to announce the launch of the sleek and stylish HTC MagicT smartphone on 22 May 2009, exclusive from Vodacom.

The HTC Magic, which is available to Vodacom Contract, Top Up and Prepaid customers, is an Android-powered smartphone with an advanced list of capabilities. Its powerful mobile Internet capabilities include an Android-optimised Webkit browser and a Google suite of services - making it a true entertainment and media powerhouse. The Android operating system makes any new applications and/or features software-driven, which means they can be uploaded by customers as soon as they become available.

The HTC Magic offers the following features:

-Being an open source smartphone, it allows customers to create their own applications.
-It features an Android-optimised Webkit browser. This browser was specifically developed for the Android operating system, and has been optimised for usage on a cellphone.
-It allows for up to eight browsers to be open at the same time.
-It provides the Google suite of services like Gmail, Google Talk, Search and Google Maps.
-It is enhanced with video capture and support for music via Bluetooth wireless headsets.
-The HTC Magic's 3.2 megapixel camera shoots photos in sharp focus, which is displayed on its extra large high-resolution screen.
-It features built-in GPS.

See attached PDF for a pic of the phone.

I'm not sure a trackball is a good idea.

The camera is only 3.2 Megapixel and HTC is not known for good imaging.

I like the promise of more capable multi-tasking, though I'm not sure having 8 browsers open at the same time is going to be useful.

The success or not of the phone depends entirely on how much support it gets. It falls in line after Symbian and the iPhone, which also have SDK's available for the public to make their own apps.

A touch screen only phone really isn't a good idea, sometimes i could throw my Diamond into the wall. Sux that MTN gets the HTC Dream that has the keyboard ... im looking into either bringing a phone from the UK or changing my SP to MTN to get the phone I want.

I'm due for an upgrade now but can't find a single outlet that has stock of this phone?

This phone looks awesome!

Multi-tasking with a phone like this is important since it can do sooo many useful things, like tracking your fuel ecconomy, while running Maps, and playing your music (fill your combination in here)

Google are putting an enormous amount of effort into encouraging developers - giving away phones at the recent IO conference, millions of $$ incentives for developers, closely engaging with the developer community etc.

I have my name down for this phone!

It has a OLED screen = awesome.
Android 1.5 seems very nice.
Camera is good.
Little smaller than the iPhone but thicker.
On screen keyboard, no hard keyboard, not quite as good as iPhone but decent.

Just got it. Fantastic phone ruined by Vodacom. Where is the Android Market, Vodacom??? With the Am this is the best phone in the world. Without it it's not worth half the price.

The 'OpenMarket' included in SA is pathetic. Seriously, what are you thinking? No Sky Map, no bubble level, no wikitude, no metal detector, no anycut, no toddler lock, no, no, no.
