Broadband Infraco’s price-cut plans

We have all seen that Seacom is a no-go in terms of price cuts.

??? We have? How? When? They haven't even gone live yet.

Didn't you even bother to read the article?

Infraco is going to step in as a national network provider.

This is a good thing.

This means that they will connect the ISPs to Seacom and the other cables at a much cheaper rate!

Why is Telkom2 better than any other company out there?

Because government says it is so, therefore it must be.

Perhaps offering existing companies incentives to perform the same function was too complicated. Or, perhaps government still believes that it can run speciality businesses better than anybody else. After government's huge successes in the airline industry, it's astounding success in the electricity generation industry and it's absolutely fantastic prowess in the broadcasting industry, government is obviously making the right move.

The company has already invested significantly in new infrastructure, but is planning more projects, including extensive network expansion to deliver backhaul capacity to underserved areas.
Perhaps selling the existing investment would be part of the future plans?

Aaaaaaarg!

I hate when people get ahead of themselves!
Wait till seacom actually goes live before you judge anything and even if it does go live it doesnt mean we will get price cuts immediately, the ISP market will battle it out first

I wonder how true this is (HTTI)? I have been looking forward to decdent internet (DI) for some time now. If Eskom and Transnet (ET) has had a network (NET) for so long, why has it not been used?

P.S. We don't need more acronyms (WDNMA)

Initially it was Seacom this and Seacom that - it was heralded as the alpha and omega in terms of international bandwidth for South Africa. Prices were predicted to drop by insane amounts.

Getting closer to Seacom's live date - we are seeing reports that say it might not be that much in South Africa as in other African countries and that the savings effect might take up to 2 years to actually reach consumers (which is a smart way of saying prices will stay the same).

So the hype air balloon of Seacom is letting off all the hot air the closer it gets to landing us some data.

Infraco will be more of the same, more hype, more insane price-cuts and then it fizzles out like an old man on Viagra.

um, in this case I think you are way off base. You are listening to the wrong people. Give Seacom a chance.

And what Seacom is doing is not the same as what Infraco is planning to do. Seacom is laying an undersea cable outside the borders of South Africa. Infraco want to lay a national network inside the borders of South Africa.

Yup like i said seacom will be just like neotel, promises and then no delivery and prices will not drop dramatically. Look at neotel now and think about all the stuff said about them.

Anyone remember goal? Was it not the same type of thing, broadband over power lines?

“The Broadband Infraco pricing strategy will deliver wholesale ECS on a cost plus basis to the market, with sufficient profit margin for Broadband Infraco to be financially sustainable and self funding for network expansion purposes in the future,” Infraco said.

It is the "plus" that worries me. I hope it is better managed than the SABC.

As far as broadband goes, we are all HDI's.

It makes a lot of sense for the government to handle the building of a national fibre network. The cost is just too exorbitant for most of the other IECNS license holders to manage. This is a good thing guys. This is what Infraco should have been focusing on from the start. Somebody behind the scenes has been talking sense.

I did - and the closer we get to D-day we start seeing articles trying to downplay the initial hype - is that not a clear indication of whats to come ?

Exactly why they won't have an effect on broadband internet. Perhaps broadband nationet - but not internet.

Seacom is not the same as Neotel. The one is an international consortium who lays undersea cables. The other is a national telecomms operator. One is already live and operational, the other still has to go live.

Please compare the right things here. Come on guys. Use some common sense.

I think you will be eating your words in a few months.

So back to square1. No gain for the small community carrying ALL the funding costs of future network and broadband expansion. No one wants to invest and recover long term. Its all about sucking us dry. I've nearly had it contemplating going back to my FM radio soon!

Seeing is believing... Can't all similar articles be archived somewhere where we can easily compare the actual results with the promises/hype generated before the actual launch dat?
