Digital TV here in April 2010

R700 per set top box . . . ridiculous.

EDIT - these boxes cost less than $50 in the US (and anyone could get a rebate from the government that covered most of it)
and in the UK start at under £20.

Its only R700.... Once off.

Then you have 2 years to get it. Not really that bad.

What I can't understand is why they don't sell the boxes now ? Dual illumination has already begun !

hmmm at R499 a standard dstv decoder is cheaper... so for the first time ever dstv actually manages to almost, on paper, look cheaper - well for the first month anyway.

It's kind of irrelevant to most mid-upper people anyway since they wont buy one unless sabc miraculously starts carrying something worthwhile and dstv lose the rights to broadcast sabc's trio of crap

The R700 is once-off and its not a reoccurring amount monthly.

So it doesnt bother you that we're paying double what other countries pay for theirs?

Personally I'm curious as to why the huge discrepancy.

Is anyone aware of any digital signals currently working in cape Town? I have a digital USB tuner for my computer and have tried to see if I can pick anything up without any luck.

We pay more than double for everything else, this is a discount !

We are making these locally, job creation, bla, bla.. etc.
Oh and before the signal is shut down I'm sure that the price will be less

I was in the UK in 2003 and they sold there first ones for P80.00 and after a year or two they came down to about P35.00(and they had top-up tv for DTB)

Just turn ur old pc or get a new media center, its much better with all the features of stopping live tv and timed recording. coolest part is u can set it up so TV goes onto ur LAN and then u can watch all different channels at the same time or record lots of channels at the same time, as with 16 TV channels???? well 1 for each official language and 5 more for sport / education then its just blah blah blah, not really counting on anything being interesting.

Looks like they are shooting for a April 1 release... :D

If I recall correctly, the set top box is so expensive because they added interactive junk to it.

set top boxes

tesco has them on special in the uk at the moment for £ 12

there are more than 60 free channels here

Just wondering.
SABC are pestering Monochoice to get subscriber details.

Won't they be able to get the details from people buying set top boxes ?
