Love that enthusiasm! :D :D :D

Great article as I was not aware of any of these "discrepancies" surrounding Screamer.

/eagerly awaits to see how this pans out.

If that's true they're kind of dumb. Building a business model on illegal actions is stupid. Any money the make will get taken away by a fine.

I think the real point here is that Sentech's spectrum should be taken away from them if they are not using it. At least Screamer is making use of spectrum whether it has been allocated to them or not...

Looks like Screamer bought the spectrum from someone at Sentech :D

Got to love the fact that Sentech does not even know that someone else is using their spectrum.... ROFL

Please don't shoot me if this is a dumb question, but what are the legalities of things such as WUG's in terms of spectrum? I'm guessing since even MyBB has sponsored some highsites it should be legal, but is that a definate legal or just legal due to to loopholes or lack of ICASA's enthusiasm?

"The company boasts coverage of 134 000 square kilometers using both WiMax and WiFi technology, and offers consumers both capped and uncapped broadband services."

Nevermind all the fuss, why must they offer the consumer capped broadband services via WiMax and WiFi? Why I ask?????? Just another service provider wanting to rape the public

The Wugs use the unregulated spectrum, 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz, so no license needed. Added to that the Wugs don't provide internet access, so they don't need a electronic license from ICASA.

Industry players at odds about the legality of Screamer Telecoms’ WiMax network

Intriguing, but probably not the first and last confidential deal to be made in the history of telecoms and probably necessary to try and break the monopoly the "industry players" have over the industry. Why should I give a hoot about what the "industry players" think when they obviously don't give a damm about me. Alan Knott Craig recently said that the remaining spectrum should be given to the "industry players" who have the resources to do something with it. Bul****! He wants to strengthen the stranglehold the "industry players" have on the telecoms industry so these kind of "secret arrangments" is just what is needed to break those cartels.

Screamer is obviously doing something right to get the "industry players" desperate to uncover the arrangement by trying to use the press so keep doing it Screamer.

general note:
allocation of spectrum = defining which bands should be used for which uses - this is set out in the South African Table of Frequency Allocations (SATFA)
vs.
assignment of spectrum = awarding a licensee a radio frequency spectrum i.e. the right to use specified spectrum

I think the real point here is that Sentech's spectrum should be taken away from them if they are not using it. At least Screamer is making use of spectrum whether it has been allocated to them or not...

SA desperately needs a secondary market which allows the trading of spectrum and it would be nice if the powers that be could get their act together in this respect - but personally i cannot agree with what is happening here

this goes back to when screamer came out of global web intact / global web and there are most definitely questions to be answered as i have seen correspondence where Sentech were aware of this as far back as 2005

no problem here other than that the WUGs should be using the outdoor hiperlan band (5423 - 5725MHz) rather than the 5.8 ISM band which is currently allocated for use by short range devices with an eirp of 25mW

Do you need a license from ICASA to use the Outdoor Hyperlan band?

no - licence exempt with an eirp of 1W

Ok, cool. I am not exactly sure what ranges we use, but I think it is in there somewhere.

I read that wifi should not use the 5600 - 5650 range, as it is by weather radar systems. (http://www.wapa.org.za/2009/07/09/w...tion-and-transparency-in-spectrum-management/)

Dominic, is there any other open spectrums that can be used without a license? I know amateur radio uses a low frequency etc, is there a list somewhere that I can have a look at?

This article certainly makes me nervous. I have my Screamer forms all filled in and was planning to send them in on Monday so installation can take place next week.

What makes me nervous is that Screamer terms say something about them not being held liable if their license is taken away etc.

All this secrecy makes me rather want to hold on to my R2500 once off rental until ICASA sorts out the licenses.

As the industry regulator, surely ICASA could be held liable for allowing Screamer to promote their services, get customers etc if Screamer were doing it illegally? I certainly hope they get a confirmed license in their own name, as their sales and technical teams service and response to my queries has been great.
