iBurst applies for more WiMax spectrum

Surely iBurst should stand in line with the rest of the ISP's out there who want WiMAX spectrum and wait for the draft allocation procedures to be finalised??

What makes them so special???
 
This is counter-information (did I just make up a new word)...

I got a Neotel flier this morning at the traffic light...

So, iBurst now needs to have a offering to match...
FAIL...

Too late. You might get the late adopters...

They should have had this plan in place already waiting for Neotel and then launched it last week. This is what happens when you eye your clients wallet instead of your future (aka 'the ball')...

Like the article said; iBurst is applying like everyone else, so no special treatment here.

But clearly if the standard allocation is going to be 30MHz and we already have a live network on 15MHz, it makes sense that this will be extended, so we don't foresee any hurdles in getting the extra spectrum.

As I've often said in the past, spectrum allocation should be based on how well it is used by the recipients and with the largest WiMax in operation in South Africa, we've clearly demonstrated the ability and desire to use what we've got.

WBS/iBurst must apply. Vodacom can not apply for spectrum - either on behalf of iBurst or on their own - because they own 24.9% of iBurst. Part of the criteria...

What about the requirement that applicants need to be 30% black owned. Is iBurst??

Think you might be confusing a few things here. :)

The article is just about iBurst applying for MORE spectrum. We already have a fully functional WiMax network, much larger that the other 'orange' one. ;)

So, I'm not sure what flyer you got this morning, but it's highly unlikely to be related to this story.

Let's pick it up in the iBurst forum, but basically which prices are way too high?

I had a quick look at some comparative pricing (very quick, so it might not be accurate):

500MB - including modem

iBurst: R169
VC: R249/R279
MTN: R249
Telkom 3G: R213

1GB - including modem

iBurst: R219
VC: R349/389
MTN: R349
NeoConnect: R279
Telkom 3G: R283
Telkom ADSL: R323+

3GB - including modem

iBurst: R469
VC: R649/799
MTN: R649
NeoConnect: no offer in this size
Telkom 3G: R553
Telkom ADSL: R515+

I'm sure this is not exhaustive, but in general iBurst seems to be at the lower end of the scale. But let's pick it up over on the iBurst forum.
 
Iburst has already shown us, that they do not care about the public. They only wants to do business with other businesses. I do understand that that is where the money is, but I also think rather lay a fixed line to that business customer. Wireless must be used for the masses. Not the privileged few. So 'n would say, "NO"

But the it's Vodacom doing the roll out and iBurst getting the revenue.
Why should iCASA give iBurst the spectrum so that they can resell instead of them building the network themselves. Well I guess Paris will be happy that atleast they are not like Sentech

Very few network companies actually build their own networks, not even MTN or Vodacom.

In this case Vodacom (together with their vendor, Huawei) were contracted to build the WiMax network for iBurst.

Jannie as a long time user of Iburst, more than 3 years, we feel we have been abandoned here in Bryanston. I live in an area where there is marginal service - right opposite the Country Club, and despite many promises, nothing has been done. I even offered a space at the back of my garden for a tower! What can you do?
