The Pirate Bay banned by court

A Dutch court on Thursday temporarily banned Swedish file-sharing website The Pirate Bay from operating in the Netherlands by granting an application brought by a copyright lobby group.
 
lol like it going to do any good , theres always more places to get my downloads :)
 
exactly - there are infact tons of websites which provide torrent . If they want to eliminate piracy , they need to think , and do something much bigger than this . Banning just ONE website out of the hundreds is not a big initiative . I don't think that 'cyber pirates' would ever quit their jobs . lol

Sigh, PB is just a search engine..

Are they gonna ban google as well now?
 
The Pirate Bay is gone. They are wasting their time and money. Everybody has already moved on. Things happen quick in cyber land. Things happen really slow in law land. When they are finished carving it up and suing the pants out of it, they will have a few binary digits left to play with. We'll be on the other side of the planet downloading the crap out of some new server.
 
If they ban this, then they should ban ALL search engines, Google, Yahoo etc. That's what PB is, a search engine. Any person that knows their stuff can do index searches on said given search engines and find torrent files. This is just BS

Piracy can occur on:

P2P - torrent, WinMX, Edonkey, ?Kazaa lite
One click downloaders and forums - eg RS
Usenet
IRC
Darknets (P2P, FTP, etc)
sneakernets
purchased online or offline

Googling for most things will return a list of torrents, direct download sites and purchase links (unauthorised ones).
 
Stealing is stealing. Period. Say what you want but, at the end of the day, you are a criminal if you download illegal content. Period. No arguments about why things are so expensive and why record and movie companies make such huge profits. Cyber pirates steal. They are part of everything that is wrong in this world. Rather than be creative(be it a band,movie producer or software developer) and provide a competitive service or product, they steal, adding to everything we try to defend our kids against.
Thankfully i've turned from doing bad things in my past and i implore other people to stand up and be counted as people our kids can be proud of.
No-one wants a criminal for a parent. We can make the difference.

I have no sympathy for criminals. You do the crime, you do the time.
Btw, I am embarrassed for the sake of all the guys who openly admit to stealing on these forums.
Wake up.
 
Is downloading content in this country "illegal"....

Profiting from it is yes.. but downloading.. not so much i think....
 
I find that criminals always try to reason their way out of what they've done. We all know what's right and what's wrong. Using or taking for yourself something that you haven't paid for or that's not been offered to you for free by the creator is stealing.
We don't need to wait for the government to tell us if something is right or wrong. We know criminals in this country have free reign and we all hate it (except if you're a criminal of course). Why can we not be people of great stature then, have some pride, and be the difference and the change.
I'm not talking about splitting the atom here. It is not difficult to be a good person and stop doing wrong things. I did it. So can you. My kids are proud of me, i stand for all the things our great country should and could be.
Believe it or not, when you start downloading illegal content, YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ENOUGH. You will never have enough harddrives to contain everything you want. Tell me i'm wrong. I've been there.

I want to share this country with real men that can stand up and be counted. You could be one of them.;)
 
You have to define a criminal based on the laws in their own country.

In South Africa, downloading content is NOT illegal iirc, distributing it for profit on the other hand is ilegal.

I don't download content simply because its too expensive to do so in this country, but i also refuse to purchase authorised copies since they are too expensive as well....
 
I am the first to agree, authorised software is very expensive. I don't deny that at all. I feel the pain too. With two kids, i'm far from rich or well-off.
I love expensive cars, can't afford it, but i don't go out and steal one on the premise that only i'm going to drive it, i'm not going to sell it to someone else.
I know i'm over-simplifying things here but i just feel everybody needs to be honest with themselves and stand up for truth.
We were born for greatness, not criminal mediocrity.:)
 
Hey allenr, I am glad you have such an open mind about this subject. Now let me tell you why I disagree.

The first movie I ever downloaded from the internet mainly because I couldn't wait for it to play in theaters in South Africa. Bad me, I'm such a thief. Funny then how a thief payed to watch that film, not once, but five times in a theater. And each time I went I took someone else with me. Not only that, but I then went on to buy the DVD. God I can't believe what a bad person I am just lock me up now and throw away the key.

I've downloaded a ton of music. Stuff I listened to once and never wanted to hear again. THen I've downloaded other music that I later went out and bought. Sometimes I didn't buy the music that I had downloaded but bought other CDs buy the same artist.

I'm the guy who spent R1500 so he could own the complete recordings of the Lord of The Rings soundtrack. So forgive me if I downloaded the original shorter versions.

There have been various studies that have shown that there is in fact no correlation between the shrinking of the music industry, and the growth of piracy. In fact, the shrinking of the music industry may have more to do with the growth of the gaming and dvd insudtry.

Not everything is black and white. And certainly the digital age allows us the luxury of being philanthropic without actually having to loose anything ourselves. Still, greed prevails and propoganda reigns. PS: how much of the money that these lawsuits bring in actually make their way to artists?

Actually, I think you will find that the correct term is copyright infringement. Let's call it what the law calls it... umkay? :rolleyes:

If you want to use the term stealing then the legal defintion of the term requires that the original be removed from the possession of the owner. That is clearly not the case here.
