The broadband saga revisited

Telkom made some half-hearted offer by not increasing their price of ADSL and increasing the cap of its Do-broadband services. iBurst reduced some of its overpriced services by 25%. I guess we should be gratefull for small mercies.

As much as i'm kinda annoyed the author implied there was a cap increase from telkom from 3 to 5, when it fact it was really 4.5 to 5. By telkom making these new cap levels official, it is forcing some cap increases by other isp's. It seem 3 is becoming the new base standard, and 5 is becoming the higher norm. Hopefully soon 10 gigs can become the norm.

huh!?

a 43 MB file in 3 mins... that isnt fast!?

Unless my calculator is broken that is 238K/sec... what is so special about that? I currently download international at 420K/sec, which will pull a 75MB file in 3 mins

that could be possible -

430 MB File in 3 min -this is Very Quick....

but 56kb dialup could also be possible ... :)

It is about time we South African's benefit & receive faster, cheaper, good priced Internet from the ISP's in the country..

SEACOM at the event was fast - faster than what we are used to on ADSL. But to test SEACOM through an Ethernet cable which essentially plugs straight into the main cable is not of much value: Interesting, but the speeds are quite irrelevant.

dude, dont hold your breath..

the bandwidth is now there (I think) but the ISP's are under no obligation to purchase more, and charge us less... doesnt make sense for them.

In the meantime we continue to get screwed... Surely there should be a competition commision or something for the broadband industry!?

**** sakes

thanks, but Im still confused...

you said its faster than what we used to on ADSL but the article indicates its slower?

 :)

I seem to have missed Iburst's 25% price reduction. When was that?

International download speeds have never been an issue. If you have a 4MB ADSL line, international speeds are actually pretty good in SA.

The issue has always been about ridiculously small caps at ridiculously high prices.

Maybe the new pipes will be reserved for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, and only after will they be considered for the man in the street.

oh of course its not like the man in the street, pays for all the costs, no just leave all those pipes for the tourists, the tourists are the people paying for our pipes they should be 1st on the list, take a million people purchasing only 1, 1gig account a month that's R70mil rand a month, but no reserve it for the foreigners.

bleh

Such a shame, disapointment after disapointment, that is what the broadband story of SA has come to... There is always some such "event" to look forward to and it always turns out a dud

I have now made it a point to exceed my cap every month. I really don't care if Telkom cuts me off on the last day of every monith - the next morning it will all be back shiney new.

yeah downloading at 400K/sec is awesome... :erm:

Im not debating that the speeds on the 4MB lines arent good, and I definitely agree regarding the caps! Im just saying we need real broadband, which can stream real 720 HDTV... THAT is broadband my friend! :)

I would also like to know when this happened?!?!??! There has been no 25% reduction?!

Yes. I only seem to remember them hiking their OOB rates to "compete" with big daddy, Vodacom.
