Cheapest 1 GB broadband service

The cheapest 1 GB broadband service

We compare the total cost of ownership of the major broadband providers for an entry level package

Is the staff writer high?

I'm paying R8219 for a 384k line (included his R899 calculation for your own broadband modem) over 24 months which equates to R342.45 per month. CHEAPER that Vodacom and MTN's HSDPA.

Do your staff writers live in the real world?

Installation cost = R0 (self install option widely available)
Line Rental = R131
DSL Cost @ an ISP = R199 (I have mine with Web Africa, so I got R99 for the first 6 months because I have a 24 month contract) which includes 1GB of data
And I'll keep the cost of the modem @ = R899

?????? Research much? There's a lot you can do/get that's WAY cheaper than WIRELESS PIECE OF CRAP

I thought that MTN 1 GB is R289 per month.
I'm paying for 2GB at R389 per month.

Is R349 for 1GB correct?

As I said in a discussion round iBurst pricing - I think the pricing structures used by ISPs nowadays leave a lot to be desired. It seems to me that the fixed cost elecment gets absorbed by the lowest bandwidth measure (e.g. 1GB) and then that price gets used as a basis for top-ups. (e.g. iBurst - R199 for a 1GB contract, then R199 for 1GB top-up).

I'd support an ISP that went back to a subscription + usage pricing policy. E.g. R100 subscription to cover overheads such as accounts, helpdesk etc that are not usage dependant and then a low cost for usage such as R20/GB or whatever the real variable cost is.

Then, I'd like to see a move to a charging system for tech support that says "our error - no charge, your error - you gotta pay for being an idiot".

Please note that on the MyMeg contracts Vodacom do not charge once off connection or for the sim that is issed therefore the table should reflect a R0.00 installation cost and not R99.00

Also AFAIK the Do-packages offers free installation (for phone line & dsl) which brings the cost down to R0 for installation.

How the hell is this a comparison of the cheapest available?? It still baffles me someone can write this and get published.... It doesn't help the average consumer at all

Hmmmm... notice no mention at all of top-up costs for the 1GB. THAT changes the entire picture of this.

Also, why not include iBursts own ADSL offering in this, rather than the "more expensive" Telkom? Perhaps to make the iBurst wireless offering glow? Other costs are questionable too, ADSL modem (modems are as cheap as R200!), IBurst desktop modem excluded and lowest cost included...

Nice advertorial again MyBB.

Would I pay a little more per month for a stable and reliable Internet connection... yes. Would I take iBurst for anything again... no.

Sorry, but in what universe do the speeds you get with iBurst fall under the definition of "Broadband"?

Seems more like a dial-up replacement to me? Am I wrong?

R899 for a router?? You can get them A LOT cheaper than that...

With the exception of not using the Telkom contract option which would include the modem for free (and possibly the self install option which would have reduced installation costs) the comparison seems to be a fair reflection of what the general public can expect to pay for 1GB broadband account from the major providers.

Yes there are methods to get the same thing substantially cheaper - however that involves knowing all the loopholes and tricks.

If you want cheap you would take the self-install option, wouldn't you?

No loopholes or tricks needed. Just plainly going out and looking for the best option at the cheapest price.

If I go to Incredible Connection and want to buy a chair, and I don't go to a furniture store to compare these prices and "hunt" for the cheapest possible with the best quality. Who here fails then? Me or the store selling me the item?

Me.

The article is another marketing bull**** spun by some anonymous Staff Writer that doesn't know his elbow from his ass. I'm sorry. But I'm direct.

Whatever happened to Rudolf's awesome formula for comparing services based on line speed/price AND quality of service?

I wonder how much MyBB got paid for this advertisement...

1GB is not broadband.

384k is not broadband.

iBurst is only broadband at a squeak.

How about a 10GB, 20GB and 30GB comparison? That's broadband.

Hahaha...

It would seem that only here anything faster than dial-up is called broadband... true broadband is presently being re-defined here as "high speed" broadband...

go figure!!!

IBurst was ruled out as a broadband provider... anyone else remember...

ASA says iBurst is not broadband .. . http://mybroadband.co.za/nephp/5088.html .

Hmmmm.... what says staff reporter now.... ?

Scary that a Telkom 384k connection is more expensive (if you're looking at 1GB pm) than a potential 7.2mpbs connection from Vodacom / MTN.

What speeds do the Telkom 3G, Neotel and iBurst options offer respectively?

At low usage levels the mobile operators offer far better deals than ADSL - the fact that our ADSL is not comparable to world standards with respect to either speed or datacap being the main reason.:(
