If I need to do some remote admin over a 384k adsl line which would be better some flavour of VNC or Windows Remote Desktop?

Vista PC (My box) connecting to a Win 7 machine (Noob's box).

Main criterion is lag-free operation. Bonus points for ease of setup on Noob's box regarding firewall etc.

Thanks

Teamviewer will be the easiest, you just need to install the program side (noobs pc), there's no need to confirure the routher or anything.

Teamviewer also has another version which doesn't require any installation, you just run the program, its called TeamviewerQS

Choice of RemoteDesktop vs VNC when taking performance over internet into account, VNC wins.

Remote Desktop uses a lot of bandwidth and will kick you out a lot. Remote desktop is better to use on a local network.
We use VNC at work to connect to servers in other provinces.Don't have any issues.

Just tried using teamviewer. Works OK. Will probably stick with it since its easier to use than VNC (No IP addr involved). Most of the problems are due to lag/narrowband not faults in the program.

Felt like maybe 400ms lag. Shaped connection. Windows Areo makes it kinda painful though with all the transparency & effects.

Remote control cuts out at certain points. e.g. When the System>Advanced system settings window open then one loses control completely (Tried it twice). So one needs the other person to help out occasionally.

Win 7 Automatic scrolling in start menu is also a PITA with 400ms lag. (Missed the same thing 3 times in a row & the opted to do things keyboard ninja style)

Thanks to all. Query resolved.:)

I always thought it was the other way around - Remote Desktop (RDP) uses less bandwidth than VNC, something about the way the protocol is implemented, and RDP is also more responsive, and freezes less... ??

Can anyone confirm?

I've tried RD from home with 3g card and im lucky if it even connects.
VNC to +-5 servers at the same time from 3g card - no prob

Strange but my experience of remote support (15 odd years) is the exact opposite. The big issue here though is getting a decent VPN connection to the remote site.

What VNC are you using? I used to use TightVNC.

For remote support there is only one tool, Team Viewer from www.teamviewer.com it really is noob friendly.

If you have connectivity to the remote server then nothing beats RDP, just set the colors down a bit and you save a lot on bandwidth and speed of the session.

Something else to consider with this decision is whether or not you need to interact with the user logged on to the remote console. VNC takes the cake on most desktop versions of Windows here. Overall performance over the internet, RDP is still better in my experience.

RDP offers far better performance when compared compared to VNC at the same resolution and colour depth, although ICA is even better. However, VNC does allow you to reduce the colour depth below 15bit, the lowest setting on Windows 7, which could improve performance.

Generally though, RDP is faster....

LogMeIn was good until you had to pay for it.
RDP is the best. My server is a Windows Vista 64bit pc in the UK and my client is Windows 7 running on a 384k connection like the OP.

Lowest settings and it works flawlessly.

VNC is a pain to setup and up till now I still can't even connect to the damn server.
