Any one else experiencing very slow download speeds on MTN Blackberry BIS lately???

Trying to download a file, the speed is 2.1KB/s, then eventually leads to "download failed" message.

The download speed on my BOLD use to be quick between 30 - 70 KB/s, but in the last two months the download speed has degenerated into snails pace. I think MTN has a saturated BIS network!!

Post your speedtest results here (MTN BIS ONLY)

Durban with full 3g signal..

Thats what I'm getting on Vodacom EDGE, hehehe. When Vodacom had their problems I didn't even get 1 kb per sec. Just glad we've been sorted(and credited).

10kbs on EDGE is ridiculous let alone on 3G, I think dial-up speed is 69kbs. If I download early in the mornings, say at 4am, the BIS speed flies, hence my opinion on the BIS network being saturated.

It wouldn't bother me too much if it didn't "download failed" all the time..

I spent two weeks in Durban South Coast area and I thought it strange that MTN BIS was so slow, but not being from Natal I just thought that signal was generally poor.

Back in the Cape I am still experiencing slow speeds here too.

I have been down this road previously with VC which had a major influence on my decision to go with MTN now, so seems like a case of jumping from the frying pan into the fire :erm:

The following is what I am experiencing on my BlackBerry 9520 Storm 2

So now we have two, I am hoping that these are isolated and will be resolved soon.

The BIS problem is due to Vodacom and MTN running the crazy R149pm deal for the BB8520.BlackBerry uptake is huge now.In most stores BlackBerry outstrips the sales of modems.....If Vodacom and MTN don't upgrade their BIS network regulary. We must expect slow speeds every 2 months....

Ok, waited till 23h00 to see if speeds would improve as people start going to bed and have the best speeds for the day as follows:

Just downloading simple apps from BlackBerry App World seems like dragging ones feet.

Initially starts, then stalls, then goes frantic, stalls again.

I have had timeouts and then blazing fast after that, so something is not quite right with MTN BIS at the moment.

Please keep this thread _only_ MTN BIS related.

At 7am the speed is back to sub dail-up speed. I guess if you want the best of MTN BIS speed, become a nocturnal bat, and restrict your download activities to wee hours of the night!!

When I called 1555, they say they not aware of any problems with BIS, the inevitable battery pull advise ensued, they really need to go and pull on something else, and catch a wake-up and at least acknowledge there is network saturation..

I took a screenshot of this strange timeout but did not manage to get the popup which said, "timed out, network failure" or something similar.

Seems like this is same or similar road travelled with VC last year and the same denials about anything wrong with the MTN BIS Network.

Will be updating tests at stages during the day to see if this is trend or isolated issues.

Sup ppl.

Also on MTN BIS. First time Blackberry user, got the phone this week (Storm 2). Using the 436 firmware leak.

Experiencing lots of timeouts (error 503 i think) and really slow app downloads. Based in CT(Claremont) and have 3G signal. Will give you the speedtest results, if and when it actually downloads.

EDIT

That was my first try, but it looked a bit fishy... So I did it again and got this...
Ok, the app must be broken, cause I'm getting the same speeds...

This looks awesome, but very short lived, the arrow danced excitedly during this test, could not repeat, back to slow speed.

Something fishy going on here.

Is there any way to test our BB's on the myMTN apn through tcp/ip, would like to see the difference between BIS and normal mtn apn...

Seems like things have gone back to normal, not sure if something was fixed but my throughput is back to normal

My gtalk doesn't even always work as I get disconnected...
