Pay-TV war

Super5Media Director comments on High Court Pay-TV interdict; accuses On Digital Media of having “alternative agenda”

Why does ICASA always want to create monopolies?

Go ODM! We also think that ICASA is trying to protect the old incumbents.

While we would love to see more competition in the pay-TV arena, it is only fair that all players have to go through exactly the same procedures.

I think MultiChoice must love this. Not a single competing pay-TV service has been launched yet, but the companies are already restructuring, getting rid of staff and going to court about licensing.

F U ODM - i want decent tv. and u F-ers r F-ing it up.

Shenzhen Media, will have good deals signed for content.
Shenzhen Media Group owns 12 TV channels and four broadcast frequencies, as well as huge program resources.

Shenzhen have also launched a online vid site @ S1979.com

Wow, dude. Move away from the tv for a while, go play outside, annoy your missus or help the old lady next door with her garden. You take your tv content way to seriously...

There is life beyond pay tv - it's called broadband...

really, which channels? I would love to know. ODM is already giving specifics on some channels. If Super5media were so great they should have everything up and running by now.

the playing field should also be equal. dont see that in this instance unfortunately. Glad ODM is taking it up.

because those monopolies pay them lots of money?

+ 1 to all of the above.

GO ODM!! We support you. ICASA needs to be taught another lesson about playing fairly. We don't want more monopolies. We want choice, and lots of competition.

@magneto - your comments are very short-sighted and childish. Remember how everyone complained that Altech was delaying the issuing of importnat licenses by taking ICASA, the DoC, and Poison Ivy to court? Even companies like Vox and ECN were against the court action. Well guess what, we all lived and survived through the delay, and came out on the other side with a much more liberalised industry, and with a much more level playing field, and with more competition.

Sure this will delay the launch of Super5media, but in the end it will be for the better.

Imagine how things would be now if Altech just rolled over and allowed Poison Ivy and her crew to get their way?

I say stick it to them ODM. It seems ICASA hasn't learn anything in the last 2 years. They need to be taught another lesson. Take them court and sort this mess out.

ODM we support you!

ODM is right in taking this to court as Telkom media have flouted every single rule and millions of tax payers money that was wasted.

I actually disagree with ODM taking this to court tbh...

If Telkom Media had actually been issued the license and THEN sold their stake to Shenzhen Media would ODM be trying to the same tactic?

We need the competition, and to punish Telkom Media/Shenzhen Media as a company for the failings of Telkom as a parent company is pointless and counterproductive to the consumer in the long run.

aren't the the same ppl behing Super5Data powered by DFA? they were gonna revoutionize the broadband market in sa, and it upset me that they didn't make it clear to ppl that 'dark fiber' is just unlit fibre that could maybe work oneday.

Cable licence and retrenchments

Super5's cable licence is to provide IPTV services. How is it then that they retrenched their complete IPTV division at the end of last year because they did not see IPTV as a strategic direction? Go figure.

Shenzhen Media

While Shenzhen Media SA has a stake in Super5, Shenzhen Media SA has no links to Shenzhen Media Group (based in Shenzhen, China) - so forget the "good" content. Super5 is all smoke and mirrors - can't wait to see what they launch in Feb.

December also brought forth new information that ICASA had awarded Super5Media a broadcast license for both Satellite and Cable services. Other broadcasters including MultiChoice and ODM were awarded a non-technology specific licence upon application. This move by ICASA has arguably now given Super5Media a monopoly on any future cable pay-TV broadcasting for the foreseeable future.

Where do you get it that they have a monopoly? If I may only shop at PicknPay and you may shop anywhere, it does not mean I have the monopoly for PicknPay.

I agree. If this is indeed the case, that the other broadcasters have a technology-specific license, then it is definitely bad. But then again, as there are no restrictions on the amount of cable stations (unlike limited spectrum), I do not see the need to have to apply for a cable license. I feel anyone who wants to try it, must be able to give it a go.

This has nothing to do with licences. ODM wants to delay the launch by Super5Media because whomever launches first will the 2nd market leader in PayTV, whomever launches last will always play catch up.

Most people who are likely to subscribe to ODM or Super5Media are current Multichoice subscribers, meaning that if Super5Media launches in February as planned, people who move away from Multichoice will have to fork out money for a decoder and maybe a new dish, it will be hard for them to change to ODM when it launches because they have to get another decoder.

ODM is banking on your emotions, why make an interdict a few before Super5Media launches? How convenient is that? Why now?
