Hi Guys,

Not been around for over a week now as I am not in my office.
I am here in Sedgefield (near Knysna) at present on holiday with the folks and need a little help please. :p

The folks have always used 56k through MWeb, but today we found out that the folks fall within a Uninet Hotspot area.

This means the folks have access to 24/7 free internet as they are within 400 m of the Uninet Hotspot.
We borrowed a USB Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11b Adapter and the set-up was a breeze.
At present the link quality is 93% and the Signal Strength is 66%.
The internet works and downloads are "fast".
Downloaded the latest DirectX from MS at 57.9Kb/sec and updated AVG at 100Kb/sec or more.

Anyway, we can retrieve email from MWeb, but we get an error 554 message when trying to send email.
Anyone know offhand what are the SMTP settings through Uninet?

Thanks in advance. :)

You could try mail.uninet.co.za but they've probably restricted smtp relay. In outlook try having the same outgoing server as incoming; and select my server requires authentication and put your account settings in advanced.
It should work if they accept authentication, if not then they're only allowing smtp relay for Mweb ip's which is a bit stupid..

oh and /me wishes i could upgrade the hijacking hotspot near me to a wireless one :P

You can always try using gmail smtp settings. I'd be happy to provide you with a gmail invite if you want one. Set mweb to auto forward to gmail while you're at it and they'll never be reliant on it again.

Incoming mail server: pop3.wdsl.co.za
Outgoing mail server: smtp.wdsl.co.za

You have inspired a signature change, anyone else that wants to promote GMail as a solution in their forum signatures? :)

Have done but was limited by the usual constraints.

what are your thoughts in general on the knysna / uninet set up?

hi Guys

thanks for the replies :)

Sorry but I am in a rush. We are about to head off to a farm to hunt some Kudu.
I will reply more in detail next week when I return home and my office.

In brief there seems a big diff between mail, browsing and d/l.
Big delay in browsing unlike ADSL and last night as I stated above the d/l speeds were good.
Otherwise I cannot comment on gaming as this machine is a horrible celeron with onboard SIS graphics. Puke.

Chat next week...

Regards, :)
