Mac Pro: The ultimate in desktop computing

What price is 'a lot' = R/$?????
You'll need to work it out for yourself from the US Apple Store if you want a rough idea. The thing is highly configurable (it holds up to 16gb of ram for example) so you have to ask how loaded you want it. :)

www.apple.com would be a good start, their webpage is naice cause it shows icons with little words on it to direct you to where you want to be.

for that kinda of money im sure you can build a server type desktop thats run just as well if not better

Yeah - but you might be forced to settle for AMD chips :p

Its an impressive box - better than the dell equivalents - and better priced too.

Sounds like a challenge!! :)
Are you relating the price to the amounts quoted on the websites, i.e. retail?
I get Dell for much cheaper than on the website.... :p

Yeah - retail and to make it fairer official websites. SA Apple prices are enough to make platinum or gold look cheap!

There are a few pricing studies that have already been done - I think they're in my sig.

no, NO, not your SIG, please no...
I'll go anywhere else.... ;)

PS> Can one only buy from local guys (SA Apple) or can you order from overseas as well (but then you will probably pay import, customs, duties, etc.)

When ever possible I order from overseas - there's always someone I know coming down and they're usually more than happy to carry it down. The downside is all my Apple stuff is generally laptop size or smaller - but that suits me fine - I hate desks :)

Apple unfortunately hasnt deemed SA worthy of an official Apple presence. Catch22 I guess. Pure speculation but to me it seems that the prices are kept just high enough to keep demand - and Apples interest in SA - down.

And whats wrong with my sig? I've even gone to the trouble of categorising things! ok - I was really bored that day . . .

It's scary man, damn scary! Once I go in there, I might not come out again / the same for days and days ... :D

I'm gonna bite the bullet and order a Mac Pro. I've been waiting for the Pro Intel machine to replace my aging Dual G4.
Guess I'll have to go for the 30" cinema as well - anything less will just not do the Mac Pro justice. Can't wait!

Bwana - why do you have version numbers?

Buying it locally? If so what configuration and more importantly how much? :) Nice screen too. They dropped the screen prices considerably so hopefully that adjustment will filter over to the local vendors.

Why the version numbers? Cos the 15 bwana's before me were insane of course.

Getting it from Digicape in Cape Town. You can check out the configurations and prices on their website www.digicape.co.za

They will also customise, but you have to get a quote and then delivery takes 8 weeks. I'm getting the 2.66ghz with 4GB RAM and the ATI X1900 graphics. Still waiting for my quote and then I will order.

Nice bit of kit that. If I had a desk I'd consider something along those very same lines. :D

Digicape is more expensive than the Zastore.

Sure, but I can walk into the store and pay cash...... ;)
And I prefer to deal with someone that I can actually go to. I'm prepared to spend that little extra for my own peace of mind.
