Voice over IP not allowed ?

I found the following in the "Terms and Conditions" of the Data Bundles on MTN's website:

"...the MTN GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE or 3G technologies may not be used to transfer or generate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic..."

This means that I may not use the "Call" feature of Google Talk, right ?

Does anyone know if this still applies ?

I get the feeling that MTN's website is not always exactly up to date.

The term and condition does apply but but Syndyre is correct by saying it's not enforced as yet!

We'll at some stage install a Cisco packet sniffer and will essentially we can start charging anything in the excess of R25 a meg, We are also at the same token working on a VOIP product offering.............

So would the VOIP product offering simply be differential charging per mb, with some sort of QOS guarantee or will it be a system where you can dial a call normally and have it routed presumably internationally via VOIP?

Data killed the cellular star !

Charging voice rates for VoIP defeats the object of using VoIP in the first place. Frankly I don't want MTN or any of the other operators to design a VoIP service. If they do it will be nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to assure future / futher revenue.

Is someone sells me data, I will use it in any way I see fit. If you sell me a phone capable of using Skype, you can expect that I will use it.

PSTN and cellular as we know it now is dead..... only legal mumbo jumbo and dodgy regulaters will keep it alive.

Cellular companies wanted to be all things to all men and become ISP's and data carriers. The next killer app (data), might be the app that kills them.

Data killed the cellular star !
 
I think cellular companies will become on of many competing data networks in future, but at the moment there's nothing to compete with them in terms of mobility, coverage etc. so they should be around for a while.

You must remember by law we are obliged to charge Voice as Voice weather it be over an internet protocol or not at the moment users are able to use SKYPE (VOIP) at no extra charge, so we don't have a choice in the matter ICASA classes Voice as voice

Then why doesn't Vodacom have the same differential pricing structure in place? If you offer switched telephone calls between 2 numbers then presumably you're obliged to charge voice tariffs approved by ICASA regardless of how the routing is done internally on the network, but surely these same regulations don't apply to e.g. Skype or Google Talk?

Well I think Vodacom are in the same place as us at the moment whereby they not charging any different for VOIP but I'm sure they must be working on something :confused:

I don't believe you.

You make a hell of a noice and use every delaying tactic if a "law" costs you money.

Now that VoIP will loose you money all of a sudden you want to embrace it and be the most law abiding company ever established.

Pull it on somebody else.

What I'm also wondering is why SAIX, iBurst, IS, Sentech etc. have made no mention of this law. They're ISPs too, and if you're carrying internet traffic it shouldn't matter that your network's also capable of carrying voice. Even Telkom allows VOIP.

Telkom insisted it was against the law to allow VoIP untill a little while ago. Telkom did it for they were loosing money. The law were changed and they were forced to allow it.

Two years later and here is MTN with the same lame story.

Eventually they allowed it and launched the "TelkomInternet Communicator", not sure if anyone actually uses it but they certainly can't claim they don't allow it anymore.

Could you please specify where in what law it states that? I would like to read up on it.
