Hi guys - I purchased MTN's Huawei E220 USB modem for my 3G/HSDPA connection for use on both my desktop and my laptop computer. It works great on my desktop, but when I plugged it into my laptop it just causes the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

The funny thing is if I run the installed software now (on the laptop) it works fine - WITHOUT the E220 plugged in, meaning that the sofware did self-install. But as soon as the E220 is plugged in the system doesn't even get to open the software and crashes.

Is this a driver problem? How do I go about fixing this?

Thanks for the help!

Can be alot of possible problems. When i get blue-screens when plugging in USB devices it's usually:

a) USB 2.0 Drivers not working [i.e. still have USB 1.1 stuff]. I only get this right by manually uninstalling the USB-ROOT-HOST in device manager, then get the USB2.0 drivers that usually comes with your laptop drivers and install it. You will know if this is an issue if you plug in a portable HD and it gives that "this device can perform faster" popup.

b) Your USB ports do not have enough power , there's usually a "root usb"-port that seemingly get more power , try all your usb ports ?

c) USB Modem device drivers itself, i'd just uninstall them manually [via device manager] and let it reinstall itself [this includes uninstall all the applicable software]

Ok - thx for the reply. I tried all of the ports - still no luck.

Also noticed that XP does detect the E220 - shows the "Found new hardware" message, but then a few seconds after that the system crashes - the BSOD flashes so quick I can't even read anything. Then the system reboots.

I'm not a complete fundi, but by using device manager it looks like USB 2.0 drivers are installed. Is there anything else I can do on this one? Is it possible that the USB 2.0 drivers are not working properly even if device manager says they are?

Also, I uninstalled the Mobile Connect software and allowed it to re-install, but still got the same result.

Anything else I can try?

Thanks!

Disable the automatic restart (annoying function in windows... techies nightmare) (win+pause, advanced, Startup and Recovery:Settings, untick "Automatically restart")

Next time ytou get BSOD you can see what the error codes and/or affected component is. Also try scratching around in the system event viewer: plenty interesting info lurking there usually.

Good day,

I've escalated this to my Device manager and Huawei and will advise ASAP

Ok - I changed the automatic restart option (thx repitah!). I can now look the BSoD in the eye. I will leave the deciphering of the info to the techies out there. Without quoting everything on the screen (not sure of what u would need) but here's 3 things from the screen that I thought would be relevant :

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP : 0x000000D1 (0x00000000,0x00000002,0x00000001,0xF7A8AE13)

dpifltnt.sys - Address F7A8AE13 base at F7A88000, Datestamp 39AC0744

I also have a complete physical memory dump if that would be necessary.

Thanks for the advice and help so far!

I am not familiar with this file, but from its name it sounds like it could be a filter driver (it can intercept and modify communication between other devices and their drivers), this is not necessarily a bad thing, but it could be if there is a problem with it.

Try using the search function in explorer to locate this file on your computer, then right-click on the file and choose properties, then click on the version tab. You should be able to determine the manufacturer's or product's name. If this name matches up with the name of your scanner, digital camera or some other device, then try uninstalling that software, restarting your computer and installing your 3G modem again.

Update: I found a reference to DPIFLTNT is the following document: http://www.harpershomepage.com/download/Defender5InstallAdmin.pdf relating to a product called Defender 5 by PassGo Technologies http://www.defender5.com/. Do you have Defender 5 installed?

hi ginggs - sorry about delay - was out of town for a few days. my first reaction to your question re Defender was "no way", but this morning I sat down and had a look and YES there it was. At first I wondered how it got there but then I remembered that when I first got the notebook I had it configured by our corporate IT Helpdesk for remote access to my company's intranet etc. I presume that Defender is part of the "package" of software needed for that?

I don't have any further need for this type of access so I am fairly confident that I can uninstall it without any regrets. Haven't done it yet cos I was just so surprised to find it! Will report back later if it changes things i.t.o. my access with the USB modem.

ok - here's the good news : I'm writing this using my mobile broadband connection through the E220 - on my notebook! That means the problem I had - (as you surmised ginggs) - was as a result of the Defender software. I uninstalled that and re-installed the E220 and after a little hassle where it couldn't find the data interface software I just copied it to the C: drive and hey presto! I think MTN can learn from this experience for corporate users who have the Defender type authentication software - not sure exactly what the conflicts are but I'll leave that to the experts, that you most certainly are. Hope that my experience helps to resolve that issue for others.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE ADVICE AND HELP! You guys are really great! I really appreciate it that there are people like you that go out of your way to help and make a difference!

Ginggs

You want me to put in a good word in ther for you?

;)

Thanks!

Just joined this Forum for the sole purpose of thanking those who helped out. I had the exact same problem and it was driving me crazy.

I didn't even know that the laptop I was trying to fix had Defender installed either. Some remnant from a previous owner apparently.

Anyway, thanks all you really helped out!

Thanks from a "3" mobile user in Ireland !

Folks,

I also joined the forum to express my thanks !!

I also found that Defender had been installed on my laptop preventing my HUAWEI E220 from operating correctly. Similarly I got a crash, blue screen of death and a reboot every time I plugged in my data modem.

Immediately after un-installing "Defender Client Software" and rebooting the laptop, it fully recognized the E220 and proceeded to install the drivers & software correctly and connected to the net without any issues !

Thanks for spotting this - you've helped me enormously, as this form of internet is the only one I have available where I live ! Phew !

Hello Sir
I get the following message when I try to install my USB modem.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP : 0x000000D1 (0x00000000,0x00000002,0x00000001,0xF7A8AE13)

dpifltnt.sys - Address F7A8AE13 base at F7A88000, Datestamp 39AC0744

I also have a complete physical memory dump if that would be necessary.

I have the defender s/w installed on my laptop and I cannot uninstall it as I will need it for my office VPN.

I need to know is there a way I can install my modem drivers without removing the defender s/w or is that a way i can disable for a while only to install my drivers and enable it after that.

Requesting your immediate support on this issue. Thank you !!

You should avoid trying to read 'tone' from printed text, especially when English might not the author's first language.

I get the following message when I try to install my USB modem.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP : 0x000000D1 (0x00000000,0x00000002,0x00000001,0xF7A8AE13)

You or your network administrator should check if there are any updates to the Defender software, or submit a fault report to the software vendor http://www.defender5.com/

nah, it's cultural.

although he IS missing the point about a public forum altogether.

I didn't have defender, and ended up having to re-istall windoze.
Fortunately I had a ghost recovery image, so there wasn't too much pain involved.
