Well I was contacted Friday by a consultant from Telkom and was asked if I want to install it myself being confident enough (I Worked 18 years for them) decided why not. Well got home set everything up no luck. I phoned 0800 375 375 the first call the person told me basically to do everything I already did but I did it in any case when he realized he is not going to solve my problem he hang up. I called a bit later and was told by the person to call 0800375375 but choose option 2 what I did. Option 2 is too find out how far the progress of you install is but well a female voice tells you they only operate Monday to Friday and puts the phone down again. Well being about midnight I left it. Saturday I decided to give 0800375375 a call again The second call to this number I was told my line must be activated in the 012 exchange but it is escalated to management the person polity asked my details and said I will be phoned once done. Left it there. On Sunday morning called again was told I must phone 0800456786 well I should have smelled a rat this number does not exist. Phoned again but well now I had enough "Craig" is in the wrong career told me he can not give me a problem ticket. I phoned again and was told that my install ref that I got on Friday was basically my ref. and then he said the magic words "The jumpers need to be changed in the exchange" Well this is the icing on the cake I battled the whole weekend while the first thing Telkom should have done before they gave me the Modem was move the cable to a ADSL port in the exchange. I am now convinced Telkom will never get their act together as the first thing they should have done was make sure their side is setup before giving the client a modem or go ahead to setup his modem. Well if I get home tonight and the ADSL light is not on on my modem I will polity give them back their modem and dect phone and sure go ahead bill me.

Agree 100% and I decided that I didn't need ADSL badly enough to put up with all the BS that company was dishing out about getting it online.

It was VERY apparent from the get-go that they wanted to send a techie out ot my premises and charge me R450 to plug in a modem. When I decided to go it alone and reduce the amount of revenue they were going to get from me clearly I became a low-priority to them.

After my episode with them last week I am within a ballhair of cancelling my home landline altogether.

My New Year's Resolution for 2007 is also to AVOID (wherever possible) doing business with companies who have Affirmative Action and BEE policies that discriminate against employing white people. Not going to be easy, but they need to know that these policies WILL hurt them.

I self installed about 7 months ago. About 3 weeks after requesting ADSL and plugging in the router, I noticed my ADSL SYNC light was solid. I signed up with an ISP and was surfing away for nearly 2 weeks before Telkom phoned to confirm that everything was working!

ok the 0800456786 line does work. ( tho lots of ppl say that it doesnt, just ask a consultant to put u thru if you cant. also. option 2 of 0800375375 takes you there ) were they able to give you an date of when this "jumpers" are going to be run? and did they mail your request to the regional manager for Self install? sounds like you had the bad luck of getting all the ignorant consultants. when it comes to adsl ask for someone thats been there at least a year.

OK I found out 0800456786 does work but I suppose only office hours because week ends it gives you NU tone.

Why does you mother tell people you a drug dealer because of tha fancy car or because you just plain simple useless

But Still all your stupids at Telkom the line needs to be activated before you give me the modem.

:D ok thnx bra u right i am dum.. ( so dum I could have got someone to call u and have ur dsl up )

I will rather do it myself that beg you to do your job
In what department are you working loser

Must I bribe you to get a ADSL line going because that is how you drug dealers work

The only one you can help is yourself so go ahead no one is watching

Wie het in jou cornflakes gepiepie vanoggend?:p

Telkom
That is why I opted for self install I will give the techie an AAK
Telkom is even uselesser than what they was in the 199x
Bragging about an ADSL line he has and did not pay for
If I got ADSL for free I can also opt for unshapped/uncapped
Just remember if telkom says their ADSL customers is now 60000 subs you must subtract the 20000 Telkom employees who got ADSL for free

Jeez dude.. can't u tell when someone is trying to help u? GangStarr is on our side here!

It's not his fault that Sizwe and Papi helped create/perpetuate the ways of Telkom. :(

Not all Telkom employees are incompetence-incarnate :D

@GangStarr: Dude, what dept do u work in? :) Or is that sensitive info?

Sorry for the necropost... but I am tearing my hair out now.

I've been doing self installs for people for about 2 years now. They usualy take me 4-24 hours to complete. But the latest one has been going 7 days with no sign of results. At 0800DSLDSL they say that self install takes min 14 days. At my local Telkom direct office, the rep checked the logs and said that the system started processing my order on Friday (5 days in) and then stopped at 2pm and that is where it sits. Limbo!

I run a online shopping site so internet a big deal for me, when I wanted to get ADSL instead of crappy Iburst they told me there arent any ports available but theyre doing upgrades to exchange. I tried 6 months later and I got a port. After that i had a self install on ADSL, wasnt that bad, they actually sent a techie to help because I was having problems getting line to sync, and they did charge me for it next month but after I called and asked them why they had it credited, all in all took about 2 weeks to get it going which is not bad considering what ive had to go through in the past. Im just wondering when theyll grant ISP's like MWEB right to set up own exchanges, would help a hell of alot having a company who actually wants to help control the data links.

The longest i ever waited for a connection was 2 weeks, a good couple years ago. On the other adsl setup up i have done of 7, never waited longer than a week on all of them. the quickest was 3 days , and they still sent out a teckie to install the phone line at my house, cause i did'nt have it up and running

i phone in everyday checking up with the same question, talking to someone new all the time helps in finding the right one to sort it out for you properly. even though they all say different things, one of them sets it up right.

I have even had telkom teckies come out on a sunday with the superviser to sort problems out at my place.
