Nice to see it a reality. The whole thing looks impressive. Can't wait to get my hands on one and try it out. :D

iPhone

Unfortunately these won't be here anytime soon, but imagine osX on your phone! Oh the joy.

If there is a plane somewhere coming to SA, it will be coming to SA :p

I see price wise they will be about $500 (appox R 3 600,00) maybe a bit extra with import duty or whatever

Maybe it will not be that expensive at all... looks like Apple will be selling them in partnership with the network providers - so maybe you'll see this bundled for "free" with a high end contract providing the networks build the backend services.
Providing the iphone works as demo'ed, the performance bar for the industry has just been lifted a huge notch.

for a high end phone releasing in April 2008, I'm a little on the dissapointed side with the lack of HSDPA integration.

In that respect apple is quite far behind, the camera seems lacking at 2megapix, no option for SD cards so not expandable

the annoucement that the iPhone is a closed platform is also bull, more and more we are seeing developers writing on Symbian and Microsoft mobile platforms, Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot here in a big way.

IMHO, it's a good looking phone with a clean menu interface, however it certainly doesn't re-invent the phone.

I think it'll pick up some marketshare from people who have used iPods in the past. The simplicity factor that Apple allways claims with their devices will pick up additional market.

Considering the Nokia N95 releasing in the next month or 2, by April 2008 who knows what Nokia will have by then which put Apple even further behind.

Something to Note... 2 year contracts worldwide!

Cingular is just a carrier - I doubt there's anything to prevent you simply buying one outright like you can with any other phone.

With 4 or 8gb storage I'm also not overly concerned expansion.

I wonder how long ICASA will take to approve it?

Sorry, I was trying to get across that we're not the only plebs getting 2 year contracts!

BTW, If they sorted out storage and HSDPA, I'd probably consider getting one, it's nice being able to pull the card out and pop it into a terminal at CNA to get prints...

D

Its a shame to pay ~R5000 for a EDGE only phone though

I'll wait for the 3G model :)

Like I mentioned in another thread - imagine trying to pull down a movie from the iTS via 3g

At r2 per mb and movies encoded to 10mb per minute - Watching Cars could end up costing you r2320

The wifi connectivity is fine with me.

EDIT - sorry - the movie cars is 1.39gb - I'll let you do the math. :D

Apple has been selling overpriced, under featured products to a ludicrously small market niche based on their former 'prestige' for way too long now.
The Powerbook you buy today not only has the same features as any other laptop but now also uses the same architecture (Intel) but still costs way more (maaan its the desiiign-its like, awsesome!).
And now their latest revolutionary device is ...wait for it ...a cell phone?? (cue sad trombone BA-BA-BA-BAWAWAWA..)
Consumers really need to wise up to the fact the Apple is resting on their laurels.
The iPhone is nothing but hype and fanboy rubbish (sorry fanboys), sure it has some nifty features (accelerometer, proximity sensor and maybe one or two others) but nothing that isisn'tmerelyan optimisation of already existing and available features on other devices.
As a k-jam user the iPhone offers me absolutely zero in terms of new features in fact the limitations in terms of useable media (you can only use iTunes friendly media - no divx etc.) puts the iPhone at a disadvantage from the outset. So far as I can tell you are unable to load 3rd party applications - also a huge and built in disadvantage.
No removable battery - another glaring disadvantage.
No memory expansion slot ...well... maybe 8gig is enough, but u never know whats around the corner - why stunt the device from the outset?
No Exchange and Outlook compatibility - I'm willing to bet that at least 90% of the people in this country that can afford such a device work in a Microsoft Exchange/Outlook environment and will not be able to use this thing based on the fact that you cannot sync appointments, notes or contacts unless you use iTunes - HUGE mistake appletards!
Revolutionising the telephone?? I think not Mr. Jobs.
Revolutionising the exploitation of idle-minded American hipsters through thinly veiled elitist archetypes - most certainly dear sir!

Which of those other laptops supports OsX, Linux, and Windows? Man - the functionality is like totally awesome dud.

Oh - devices - plural? So I need to carry around a few devices to obtain the same functionality? That rocks :)

I thought this was a problem when I started playing around with FrontRow that apparently doesnt play xvid/divx - same with iTunes - but I was wrong. There are simple work-arounds for that and there will be work arounds for this. I noticed something else while playing around h264 is just as good or better than xvid. BTW - Why is divx (and who uses divx anymore?) so important to you. At first I though opensource advocate but then I noticed divx.

No removable battery - another glaring disadvantage.
That does suck.

Could be a problem for some.

I dont really think that the 90% of people who can afford it in this country are Apple's intitial target. Besides the device runs OsX so there is bound to be a certain degree of flexibility for the future.

i thought it was 40gig to 80 gig.....it doesn't sound too bad for now....what other phone has this?

appletards....hah ahaha hahah i'v never heard this insult before....it has a certain ring too it.

the ibook and pc's do look a million times sexier than the everyday pc....my only problem would be ? cna you play a game on os X....yes y ey sys i know you can dual boot, but that just seems irratating

Yea, many other convergent devices (as in single device but namy of them - sorry that WAS ambiguous, my bad:) ) offer the same if not more features therefore: iPhone <> revolutionary.

I used DIVX as an example (hey call me old school:D ) but being locked into iTunes IS a disadvantage, therefore : iPhone <> revolutionary.

Basically I am really disappointed to see the much rumoured iPhone come out and its a P.O.S.
Its a sad day whe the IT industry's leading innovator's latest greatest is a tacky, overpriced cellphone.

What really gets my goat is that Mr. Jobs has the gall to call this thing revolutionary it quite obviously is not and I dont mean that in a 'point of view' sense I mean that as in: it has the same features and less than other devices you cannot in the English language call this revolutionary.

I think Apple could have remained sincere in making an Apple PDA phone as a partner to their existing computers and notebooks - this diluted 'smart phone' thingy is tacky as hell.

As an mp3 player though what I'd like to know is can you now use the 'phones' bluetooth/WiFi to broadcast what youre listening to to your mates nearby? Folk have been wanting that for years now.

i'll get my dad 2 get me one from the states ;) ;)
nice add to my collection of apple I stuff heheh-
