One of the best critiques of AA I've read recently and this comes from a black man, which is even more impressive.

Buthelezi slams affirmative action

01 February 2007 12:22

The government's reckless implementation of the affirmative-action policy is forcing many white people to leave the country, creating a skills shortage crisis, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Thursday.

Writing in his weekly letter, Buthelezi said white people need to be offered incentives in order for them to stay in the country.

"We need to grant white South Africans a meaningful stake in the existing order ... not only does this make economic sense, it is also in line with our vision of a non-racial South Africa of the struggle days," he said.

The reason a majority of white people supported the then-National Party's referendum calling for an end to apartheid rule was because they believed they would have a place in the new South Africa, said Buthelezi.

"If the majority of white South Africans had envisaged in the early 1990s the way affirmative action and racial classification would come to dominate the post-apartheid labour market, few would have voted 'Yes' in Mr [FW] de Klerk's watershed referendum on constitutional reform," he said.

The IFP, Buthelezi said, will be proposing a forum to explore ways of keeping white people in the country.

"My party proposes to hold a widely representative forum to look at why so many white people have left with their skills and what can be done to keep them and encourage those who have left to come back," he said.

Buthelezi also criticised the government's Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), saying it has failed to create jobs.

"The IFP has consistently pointed out the EPWP can never be an unemployment panacea [for the simple reason that that] it is not part of an open labour market and most of the working jobs created last only as long as the infrastructural programme that has prompted them.

"What South Africa needs to create jobs is an open labour market," he said. -- Sapa

Once upon a time I think this government might have listened to advice but that time is gone.

Since Buthelezi gained so much from the Apartheid regieme, it's no wonder he longs for the good old days

That has nothing to do with his comments

I mean really, we have emerged from a past - a recent past - 12 years is not a long time - where priveledge was given to whites, now he says we must provide incentives to whites - so give them a priveledge again - at what price - keep whites in the country so that blacks don't have a chance to get good jobs and improve their lot - sounds like Apartheid to me

Ah, old wounds: so much for building a better future together (liar!) Perhaps this explains this governments policies of appeasement towards crime and non-support of anything that is not their own, even at the expense of the whole country.

The government is not interested in jobs, or skills. If it is not black it is not wanted or good enough. Worse racists than the Nats.

Time for you to come clean: do you want a unified nation where everyone is equal or do you want black domination where there was once white?

You don't need to answer, your attitude speaks for itself.

Get FF, it has a spelling checker built in. That is my only piece of advice for you.

Your train of thought is beyond repair.

I will answer,

I want an equal society, but after decades of inequality, we have to bring blacks up to the standard of whites, so that we can have this equality. This means that as suitably qualified blacks emerge from Universities, etc, they are given preference in the workplace - if this were not enforced - whites who were in control of the wealth, would not give them a chance - this was proven before AA was introduced - in fact one can say that the attitude of the whites are responsible for AA.

You will now respond with no basic understanding of this concept, but I have come to accept that, as many of you don't comprehend simple logic

xtermin8or : Sorry, where do you see him calling for special priveledge for whites? He is saying that whites should be granted the same priveledges as other race groups, not only for economic reasons, but as this was the original vision for SA

Once again, it is not my fault that your comprehension of simple logic does not exist, all I can do is feel sorry for you

xtermin8or : Your reasoning is flawed. Sure, the sectors of the society that have suffered in the past must be brought up to the same level as everyone else. Good idea, no-one disputes it. The problem is when the way it is implemented starts ruining the economy, then everyone suffers.
Simple really

.

incentive = privilege

xtermin8or : You are now just being argumentative

incentive != privilege

For people who are lacking in many of the rights afforded to the rest of the population, being offered those rights is an incentive not to leave (or come back)

You can whinge until you're blue in the face, if you don't like it you can just leave this country.

Sounds like apartheid to me.

That is a pipe dream at best. You cannot create a working, healthy, equal society through inequality no matter how much you wish you could.

As for your other point - that white business owners wont give blacks a chance - do you have any proof? Did whites not vote to abolish apartheid. You seem to think they democracy come about through force in this country rather than a desire to change. Add to that the government should be creating incentives for black people to join the economy and grow it rather then their current policy of replacing whites. There will always be some people who are resistant to change but what you are implying is that all whites are racist and yet you still have the nerve to say others generalise and call them racists.

You are arrogant enough to say that others don't have basic understanding of the concept, perhaps you believe only blacks can understand it? Perhaps you think you are the only person gifted enough to understand it?

Your accuse everyone else of being racist or "white supremacists" but you exhibit all theses traits more than nearly everyone else here.
