so I got ADSL.
Got the Telkom closer package 4.
Awesome. Did the self-install.
Got my nice Netgear Router 834GT or watever.
Set it all up.
Got a 1Gb unshaped account from Axxess.
Phoned Telkom support, eveything is hundreds their side.
Phoned Axxess support, eveything is hunderds their side.
My router says its authenticated and connected.
A little bubble pops up at the bottom of Windows saying,
"Internet Connection now available...".
I setup my DNS server addresses. I deleted all my old dial-up
stuff, including proxy server stuff. I rebooted a few times,
both the PC and the router. It all comes back to being in
perfect condition...
EXCEPT: I can't browse the net. I dunno about email, i use gmail.
Guys, i speant from 5am to 10pm trying to do anything I can.
I've given up... it just won't work. I've gone over every forum.
I've checked every setting.... PPPoE, DNS, DHCP, IP, login, LLC, VI etc.
I know more about ADSL than a techie now, and I learnt it in a day.
But i'm stumped. Everything says the system is running fine, but
no websites load. I can ping my router. I have reset it at the back,
through the little hole. I have setup my LAN connection. Seriously,
there must be something I've missed? I think watever the problem is,
it lies in Windows and or Internet explorer. I also used Firefox, but it
just uses explorer settings. Incredibly, my dialup works better than
ever before. I don't get dropped, my speed is good, it always connects.

Please please help me out.

What's your mtu on the router set at? Should be 1492

Have u tried to statically set your IP addresses? Make sure you set the sub-mask the same on your router and PC

2cents

1) try bridge mode instead of router mode
2) run "nslookup"to verify that your dns is infact working when set to obtain automatically.
3) do a tracert by ip "tracert 196.25.1.1"
4) do a tracert by name "tracert igubu.saix.net"
5) do a "netsh winsock reset" as well
6) unplug all your telephone(s) and fax machines...leave just adsl in

thing about self install - telkom doesn't test your line to check if you are in synch distance , quality ect...

Ive had a problem where by a router says its hundreds, connected, resolving IP etc but just not throughput, until i enabled the bridge.
As JAS said, regarding Self Installs, its often the problem when the line isnt verified, you can usually tell this if you can visit the telkom homepage without a problem and not any other sites. Telkom techies are prone to over looking this problem on their side.

According to your post you were using a proxy with your dialup. In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet options, now select the Connections Tab, click LAN Settings, make sure that none of the boxes are ticked. (All three box should remail unticked.)

Netgear routers requires NAT to be enabled, if I'm not mistaken this is enabled by default. I just tried disabling mine and boom...no internet although it says connected. Try that too if all else fails.

sorry, was away the whole day. some more info:

NAT is enabled. always was, is by default as you say.
Definitely unticked everything in LAN settings.
CANNOT get to telkom site. i can on dialup, duh and
i asked a telkom technician to verify my adsl over the phone.
when i do it on my dialup, it just says, your request has been
processed and ends there? - if this is the problem, ill explode.
As for bridge, well thats my bad, Netgear router doesnt
have that ability it would seem, i stand corrected.
why pay R450 when most ppl have never needed the guy
to come out, and waste that cash. ADSL works well these
days, its my luck that i get a bumb connection i guess.
MTU is 1492.

ill check the subnet masks, and get back to you.
and ill do all this too...

PS. the telkom dude said on the phone it is syncing...
ill let u know how it goes.

Don't use custom DNS settings for now, try it with the defaults, use as much defaults as possible to narrow the fault down, also, check your LAN TCP/IP settings if there isn't anything set there, remove it, default, this is telscum, they don't know customization.

ok...

nslookup: times out. DNS servers unavailable.
thus tracerts dont work either. they hop to the
router and then timeout.
did the reset and the disconnect, no change.
subnet masks all in order. LAN on router 255.255.255.0
and same on my pc. i can have static ip or use the DHCP,
i get assigned the same ip (192.168.0.2) and subnet masks.
well theres definitely a problem with the router getting
to an outside ip address. since it couldnt find my DNS servers,
it'll never resolve a website. i also did automatic assign DNS
from the ISP, made no difference... im stumped.

iv got a bad feeling its the dam adslverify thing.

If all else fails I would suggest trying another router and maybe a test account from another ISP or as last resort get a techy out. It might be an exchange issue.

or let somebody configure the router for u and try a diff isp
could be your isp you know
or even your line is ba***

I've got the same issue, and the same router. However, I tried the router on anoher ADSL line and it worked fine. Hence, I really doubt it's the router (at least in my case). I think telkom is screwing up
