I'm currently with openweb's 384k uncapped account through IS. My download speeds and logins have been very erratic since the beginning of the month. I often struggle to log in and have to redial 3 or 4 times to get on sometimes not able to log in at all for short periods of time and my download speeds often drool at about 15k. I find that right after I connect I can go for about 30 minutes at max speed but at that point almost like clock work the speed is reduced again. Has anyone else experienced similar erratic behavior? Keoma has been kind enough to log a fault with IS for me after I provided him with my international pings on the account. I'm really pulling my hair out here... I almost got to the point of obtaining a dialing application to redial my connection every 30 minutes

Could it be your line ? Try another account maybe. Have a look at your sync speed, SNR and attenuation. I'm on a 384 kbps line, here are my stats to compare with (my line makes connections to various accounts very well):

Downstream, Upstream
SNR Margin : 42.0, 27.0 (db)
Line Attenuation : 25.5, 14.5 (db)
Data Rate : 384, 128 (kbps)

Now i'm no expert, but apparently if your SNR is too low and/or your attenuation is too high; this is bad :)

^^ , negative - not related imho.

as far as i understand - certain 1024+ IS accounts have the "window/threshold" system. (not sure on 512)

not on 384.
just prolly slow IS :D

I had the same problem last week. Unfortunately it came right on its own on Friday night so there's no advice I can give you. A fault was logged with Openweb, so at least they know that you're not the only one who's had the problem.

Please don't tell me there's problems with these accounts...I was planning to move to a 384 uncapped month end. Surely if it's uncapped there should be no threhold? Hmmmm Can anyone from, Openweb explain this?

Proff

There's no threshold on the standard IS uncapped accounts. The ones with a threshold are the Gamco etc. accounts.

The Online Digital Solutions 384k accounts are not subject to a threshold. However I have noticed that IS are bursting at the seems on their IPC links. (I believe upgrades are been done), additionally if you use a connection at two locations you will automatically be put onto a threshold.

red lights flashing - just received mail - seems alot of "window/threshold" going on from IS as confirmed by openweb - even on 384!!!

bad ppl bad ..

I'm Having The Excact Same Problems

I'm also on a openweb 384k IS uncapped account and also having the excact same problems I have to do the connection more than 2 times just to be able to connect and If I do connect my downloads are either screwed up and I have to redownload them or they just don't go at all. I have also founded that I cannot even access certain websites locally or at times log into the gaming servers hosted locally. This is beyond redicolous and for a R1000 bucks a month so far a waste of money.

I have reported the links to openweb whom forwarded it to IS I would however like to know if there's any possible way that I can get a refund seeing that I'm not getting the service I'm paying for will email openweb with request and see what happends when IS has sorted themselves out I will purchase or continue the services

We have had no such communication from IS regarding the implementation of rolling window caps. Conkill this is why our uncapped 384k is at R 800 ex until such time IS increase their bandwidth or on their IPC links

as per received email...nice business model hey...uncapped <----- hmmm

Internet Solutions have implemented a 10 day rolling window on all Uncapped Express ADSL accounts.

The accounts affected will be Business Uncapped Express, 384k, 512k and 1024k. (Uncapped accounts that allow you to use your own router).

The 10 day rolling window is hereby explained:

Business ADSL Express
The Business ADSL service has been developed mainly for the conservative business user who requires the assurance of an uninterrupted / uncapped and fixed cost ADSL service. The Business ADSL Express service is a managed service, where by the customers usage is monitored and recorded. The service is allocated a certain threshold for the month which is divided into a 10 day rolling window. If a customer reaches his 10 day threshold before the 10th day, his bandwidth will be halved (e.g. 512Kbps will be dropped to 256Kbps). However, if his consumption is reduced, his bandwidth will be restored to the purchased level.
This mechanism has been put in place in order to discourage abuse of the service and thereby giving the “conservative business user” a more superior service.

Below is a matrix depicting the service / line speed and their associated thresholds:
Line Speed Threshold Rate Limit 10 day rolling window period
384kbps 15Gb 192kps 5 Gb
512kbps 30 Gb 256kbps 10 Gb
1024kbps 60 Gb 512kbps 20 Gb

Just got home and my uncapped account also seems to be screwed. Does the Openweb 384 uncapped package count as an IS Express account?

Well...if the above is indeed true, then I have to say yet again that this service cannot be called uncapped. Only in bladdy South Africa will you find crap products like this.

Shyte - I'm not paying R1000.00 for a product like this.

Where did you get this email from? Which ISP?
