Union struggles to get Vodacom's recognition

"Whenever we present the company with our member numbers, they give us a different workforce number. Therefore, we never seem to reach our target," said Selelo.

Eerrrmmm... It's called "growth" chop

exactly....i feel nothing for the current wave of militant unionism that is in south africa. i'm always curious as to why people join unions.....could it be you're a slacker and you want the group to determine your increase...not your actuall actions.

Apparently most employees at Vodacom actually don't mind earning a decent increase and see no reason to throw money at a bunch of useless idiots who know nothing about the business or the industry.

As far as I'm concerned this is exactly the kind of support unions are going to get when they attempt to recruit members at companies where education level is high

It might be interesting to note that many of those workers on strike are high performing workers so that kinda nullifies the argument that these are slackers. In fact they are the very backbone of Vodacom as opposed to the so-called intelligent managers that cannot make decisions that would benefit the whole organisation. Maybe those in the know are aware of instances as listed on http://mynewsblogs.24.com/cheguvara which is why they support the strike.

It is obvious that there is more to this strike than money and benefits - maybe that is why these workers are actually fighting for union protection - and not increases or benefits. Know the truth before you post such mindless dribble. In order to comment on something honestly you must be impartial and comment on the facts. It seems as if this dude on this blog is doing just that and the only thing you guys can come up with is insults. Grow up and post constructive comments or are you an example of your percieved intelligence?

If they don't have the 30% membership required for recognition how can they expect to be recognised? They're perfectly entitled to union protection from recognised unions. The fact that less than 30% of the workforce choose to join this union probably says a lot about the union itself.

Well if these guys are the very backbone of Vodacom, surely Vodacom would be suffering without them at work, and I must admit I have noticed nothing different without them around, so I can't really see how or why they are so important.

Can't see that they affected Vodacom's services at all

Me too, everything seems to be working fine, maybe its time for Vodacom to downsize...

4000 employees seems like nothing for a company with so many subscribers and such a huge network to run though.

No, it's not time to downsize... in fact they should employ more people esp in the call center and other divisions dealing with their valued clients. Yes 4000 is a small figure for a company that boasts 23mil subscribers. Are any of you Vodacom subscribers? Have any of you called customer care? You wait forever ( ok.. 30 min to an hour) to get assistance.. when they have all their work force!! So they are feeling the strike, but they are not going to let the public know...they will maintain their front. I work for them, I know how they/we do things.
Now for the truth, Vodacom is not a bad employer. On paper everything is all good, so obviously when they comment on issues they will give you, the public, the version that's on black and white. As an employee all I want is what is on the paper to be put to practice.
Vodacom is one of SA's corporate giants. We are not striking because we are lazy individuals, we are doing so because there are matters where you cannot approach this corporate giant as an individual. The benefits... thats another thing on its own, they haven't told you when the package went up, they haven't told you that is was done in a manner unfair to others, there's a lot they havent told you.A lot.

Usually during a strike, the work is doubled up - extra shifts, more temp workers, managers filling in for wekkers, longer waits, less customer service. They can't do that forever - and the strikers know it...

The downsizing was a joke. :D I use Vodacom for both voice and data and find them great to be honest, aside from the call centre maybe, although I can't remember when last I actually called them, 155 answer quickly anyway. What was unfair?

A mouthpiece? - is that like a lip piercing or what...

Maybe I have been looking at this strike from the wrong perspective - I was thinking that these CWU members should abandon the CWU and join an existing union that already has 30%+ membership, but I now realise that after weeping on the same wall for 5 or 6 years, the other unions must have an anti-dumbass clause that is actively preventing these people from joining another union.
