GPRS/EDGE access growing fast

I inquired from CellC, MTN and Vodacom and I still can't get anything better than GPRS 40km East of PTA where I live.
I thought WiFi technologies were supposed to be good for connecting rural areas but it seems that only the towns and cities get the technology.

Can you really say some kid using mxit has internet access though?

Yip with that sentence they do, gprs is internet.

@ Pitbull theres alot of nooks in JHB that also have EDGE.

Yes, you would have to define "access".

Cost of data is too high (is that access?).
Cost of data card is maintained too high (is that access?)
Data speeds are pathetic (another barrier).

Vodacom has left our community having to be content with gprs while the next area over, with only a handful of people, gets at least EDGE.

I might be wrong

but

AFAIK Vodacom doesn't have Edge
don't know how up to date this is, but quite a few areas if you check here

edit: oops, i see carudden beat me to it - that's what happens if you have the page open too long before posting :D

Lol but they have excess!

People need to forget dial up and start using their cell phones, - cost nothing, send emails for 2 cents - checked posts etc - read the paper and checked my two main email accounts - total cost 20 cents

"The rapid uptake of 3G/HSDPA in South Africa is well known, but unfortunately GPRS and EDGE are taking a backseat to the newer and faster successors."

Why unfortuntely, GPRS and EDGE are **** (more so on CellC)

I can not understand why the iPhone only has EDGE, they should have rather
put 3G/HSDPA on it!!!

Well i got only gprs. Too much much interference along the 25kms of telkom lines (had land line before and complained many times but they said i must go along the 25km's and sort out the trees myself lol)

I got no edge/3g/hsda, lol - whats that)

I can only connect to vodacom, i'm on virgin. MTN comes up as the only other suggested connection, but its locked.

whilst i can live with gprs, something faster would be nicer.
