In an effort to get away from proprietary camera batteries and give my camera some longer legs I've just ordered a Grip Battery Holder that accepts 2 canon battery packs or 6 AA cells.

What would be the best brand rechargeable battery for it? Should I consider anything below than 2500ma - I'll also be looking to use them in a flash when I get around to finding one that is. :D

I actually bought the canon branded (NB-3AH - 2500mAh) rechargeable batteries for my S3IS and they last forever. Uniross (as mentioned above) have a huge range here in SA. Also Energiser. They are pretty well priced too. Something 2500mAh and above would be good.

Alot of the brands seem to do the job to be honest.

Those Uniross batteries is fine, it's basicly rebranded Bosch batteries so they are good. I would go for atleast 2500mah

I purchased the Canon S5IS camera and loaded it with Hahnel 2700mA/h batteries. Personally, had never heard of them till I phoned a few professional camera shops - they all recommended them. I believe they are made in Ireland (surely not an Irish name!)

Update - the grip arrived toady :D then the missus saw me with it, admonished me for playing with whats supposed to be for my birthday and confiscated it :o

On the plus side it adds some (welcome) heft to the camera, a bigger grip area, and gives second set of buttons and dials to make portrait shots easier.

Now I just have to wait . . . .

I've got Sony ones, 2100mah I think, they seem to last for quite a while, had no problems with them.

I vote for the Uniross 2300mAh or 2500mAh batteries too. I'd rather not go for the Energizers, just because they're more mass-market

GP and Hahnel have worked best for me. I'd just buy the highest capacity you can find. Picked up some 2700mAh GPs at local camera shop for R25 each not too long ago.

That seems pretty reasonable. Hope I can find some locally :)

Hmm, that grip is on my wishlist as well :)

note to self: pick one up before the bushveld holiday

Turns out I'm going to need a new camera bag too now :)

. . . also a flash. :)

hahaha, always happens ... I got a nice Tamrac backpack version ... oh, and my wife bought me the 430 EX Speedlite a while ago ... very nice flash

I must have been editing my post as you were submitting yours. :D

EDIT - and I'm gonna need a whole lot of rechargeable batteries - two sets for the grip and three for the flash. 24?

LOL ... I think something like the 430EX is perfect for you (thinking about your lightbox) ... being able to hook a couple of them and (I think) the 540 up wirelessly should come in quite handy for you

EDIT: and I don't want to lie to you, but the recharge on the flash is under a second :D

bwana, did you import from bhphotovideo? Cost on top of the grip?

Just looked at my wishlist there ... $169-99 for the grip, translating to ± R1200 ... the camera shops here want R1999 for the grip
