I know all about the IS news server first of all, don't worry.

I'm just wondering about the SAIX newsserver now, on the Axxess site, they recently added that the SAIX newsserver now mirrors GigaNews.com.

http://www.axxess.co.za/local.php

Has anyone used this yet? I'm assuming speeds will be good as SAIX can afford to do so, and the price of local SAIX is quite a bit more expensive, but still useful for me. From what I can tell this means they should have a lot of good content on their newsserver, can anyone check it out?

You can access it from news.axxess.co.za or news.saix.net (I'm actually just guessing this one)

yip...it works fullspeed - but its expensive

R190 bux for 10gig local Saix acc....

vs

~R130 for 30gb local IS...

Cool so saix news server works now? Has all binary news groups?
Telkom should allow news server usage once cap is reached, then I wont complain about nothing for a long time :D

iS Competition finally arrived?

WOW !

thanks for the heads up, this might mean i won't have 2 use newshosting and save it for another tk account or 30gb acc :)

sweet, now only for local to b uncapped or waaay cheaper than iS

although expensive this should mean prices will come down

This would be great if local bandwidth from Telskum's side was cheaper, it is rather silly to mirror the huge GigaNews when we have to pay through the nose to use it. Oh wait, we will use GigaNews as a chat forum, and downloading anything off it will be abuse. Come now Telcrap, give us a Giganews only account, nice little 30gig portions for R300, oh wait we still have single figure caps on our accounts, 3 gigs.. oh in that case shove it up your shiny sheriffs badges!

it works - i tried it

i get like 35KB/s

On a 384kb line?

btw, what does it mean if they mirror Giganews, do you still need a subscription to giganews.com or is it all free from SAIX?

I know the prices are still bad, but I might just use a 3 Gig account for unshaped local gaming on SAIX, then with what's left I can dl on the newservers every month.

Ekhaatvensters, You always ask the right questions! I also saw the "NEW!!" thing on the Axxess website about mirroring Giganews, and also got stuck on what that means. I am moving to ADSL, as soon as Telkom get a move-on and tell me I can go and pick up my modem. :D , And after going ISP hunting ( I went through them ALLL – setup a comparison chart on the prices of each for myself) I now sit with a split road. What News server do I want access to? Its either Axxess that throws around a big name news server with $$$ SAIX local. Or the normal Cheaper IS Local bandwidth. But hopefully someone out there will answer (y)our question.

you don't need a giga account,you don't need an axxess account...just a saix account.

Use it for some days now, full speed 39k on 384 line. This is more usefull to me than an IS server that relies on cache stuff, 'specially if the cached stuff it's not the stuff you need.

...quiet now guys before they have this server shape like hell too.

Thanks biggie, ag SAIX can afford to leave it unshaped, they have full speed FTP downloads of huge game demo's and patches. They are the one ISP/provider in SA who don't have bandwidth problems.

So exactly what is on that news server? Basically everything you would need, all the latest TV shows, music etc that giganews would have? It seems almost too good to be true.. if only it was as cheap as IS.

I know it's not ISP specific, I was just thinking of Axxess for SAIX local and it was the only place that mentioned this.

No sweat...everything that's on the IS news server...and more.Giga now got 200 day binary retention. But the best place for now for the ordinary stuff,tv,movies, apps, games) still is IS as that's normally cached.

Might as well purchase a 2 gig soft capped Telkom account.

Good = cheap. I will not pay a premium for speed. I want quantity, and the right to be connected the entire month without purchasing new accounts.

I'll stick to my IS 30gig local + openbrowse. At least I'm never tempted to buy new accounts since it takes an entire month to get that 30 off the newsserver.

I'll pay a premium for higher than 10kb on uncached content, or a small selection of stuff I mostly don't want at full speed. The giganews server would just make more sense for me, and I don't need to be downloading all month.

Anyway I was just wondering about the service...

Well perhaps it has been the art of misinformation that has kept the SAIX news server so good ?! :D Either that or it has gotten better since that thread (about a year ago).

BTW I grabbed a grouplist before Axxess updated thier site (IE like 3 months ago), and I grabbed one now and they seem about the same (in size esp). Still smaller than IS's but I suspect that IS is subscribed to many useless groups ;)

Well most groups on usenet are useless, you'll end up using about 20 out of 100 000 odd...
Which ones are the better newsgroups? Better in terms of stuff that's more likely to be downloaded by the people with the 30GB local accounts.

10 GB  How much news do you read ?! That's what news server's are for right, discussions and what not  Lol :p

It allows 5 connections. Although on 384 even on 3 you'll get full line speed... I somehow suspect that it will not be long until SAIX news ends up where IS is now (overused due to publicity that is) :(
