Do we treat the ISPs too softly?

This is in response to a couple of posts I have seen over the last week or so and it got me wondering whether this is the general attitude we have to ISPs. The two cases that spring to mind is Necuno and Openweb, and some other fella and Axxess. There were posts there stating that the two complainants should direct their energies at IS and Telkom respectively.

This got me thinking. Money has been paid to the ISP to provide a service. They are profiting from you and I. Yes making money off us. Therefore this oh shame the poor ISPs attitude is what will make the status quo no better. We should be pressurising those who receive our money and they should then pressurise their suppliers.

I have never heard someone at a restuarant saying the meat was no good so instead of berating the restuarant owner go berate the farmer who sold him the beef.

Whomever accepts my money for a service is entitled to both my accolades and my complaints.

I agree, someone posted on a post of mine that I can't expect service from a ISP, they just sell me the package, but I can... I dont wanna have to come to 'myadsl' to find out the international link / saix is having problems and thats why my emails are downloding so slow, i wanna phone the isp, and THEY must tell me, thats their bloody job!

It seems these days, any tom dick and harry can sell is packages etc.. but not many can actually support it!

true - the ISP seem scared of Saix/IS or money they enjoy the profiteering as milomak said.

I only hope the Minister come to her senses and untangles the whole under sea cable issue so we can have more choices of bandwidth providers, but this should not detract from the isp's being toothless.

Totally agreed... you offer a service, its up to you make sure you deliver

Simple Business.

I pay you, you work for me.

No service, no pay.

Had an issue with Telkom last week and took this stand with them over my actual adsl line. Believe it or not, they said I must contact the accounts department and quote my reference number and they will credit my account for the days that my line is not suitable. I nearly fell off my chair.

Personally I am with imaginet and I find thier service quite qood. Today, I'm spending at a friends place who has Openweb IS and the service here is terriable. He's capped intl which is understandable but half the SA sites don't work or work very slowly.

I agree with WillySA that we need something like HellISP but would it help you as a poor sod when you can't even get to Hellkom.co.za which is locally hosted I beleive.

And the palming off of ISP's to network providers is pure rubbish. I pay you, you go sort the problem out and report to me.

Bring on Vodafone or someone ..... Please.

SOP - Standard operating procedure, with Telkom when a fault is reported on the line and ticket is created/ref no.

2 things..
1. Not all SA sites are hosted in SA
2. If your dns is not set right, an auto one might be used and for some routers that's not hosted in SA which might be sluggish to non-responsive.

But then there is always the whole IS network which goes on a vac now and then when the sat is having issues :p

Hellkom is hosted in Germany, and not South Africa.

It is unfair to the customer when the ISP simply says it's a problem with Telkom/IS and they aren't responsible for anything despite taking your money each month.

I pay the ISP for a service, where the ISP gets that service from, or how they manage that service, is not my problem. Yes, unfortunately there are only two options available in this country currently, but the onus lies with the ISP to secure good relationships and professional services from their 'suppliers'.

If the ISP can't provide me with a decent service, then either the ISP, or the ISP's supplier has failed me as a customer. I have nothing to do with the ISP's supplier, and therefore, naturally I keep the ISP liable...

I don't go to PnP and go and moan at Diary Bell when I buy a bad piece of cheese... I moan at PnP! :)

you are a debit...

this goes well with the ostrich syndrome

"stick head in ground - its not my fault, i got it from someones else and they must go beef there..."
