Bad weather causes Telkom service disruptions

Call volumes could have been lower if they could only answer the phone and help their customers, and not either transfer you to oblivion, or hang up on you.

Then they could get decently trained technicians with proper equipment willing, and not some pea brain who tells you that there is nothing wrong with the ADSL line(on which a router was blown by lightning), and that it is the NEW ADSL lighting protector that is the problem.

Points to above:
1. Router replaced by new one (Non Telkom)
2. The technician stated that his equipment for testing is less sensitive than an ADSL router
3. The same router with same and different ADSL accounts (Webafrica & Telkom) works perfectly on another line at another exchange with AND without the lightning protection.

Oh and we tested it with another ADSL router as well, also working perfectly on the other line!

So yeah, the weather is a handy excuse, but hardly the root cause of their problems, it merely highlights their shortcomings!!!

Isn't it funny that you can report a fault with your ADSL line by logging it electronically via the Telkom website - www.telkom.co.za?

How if you have no connection to the internet?:confused::confused::confused:

I find this amazing! .. what do the Telco companys in Sweden, Norway and all those countries do when something gets wet!

Its piss-poor installations to start with

I think it should be law (as a means of preserving hair), that any person who obtains a service from Telkom must have a phone with a speakerphone. Because if you phone Telkom you're sure to have to wait an eternity before they answer. Can you imagine all those poor people who must have pulled out their hair waiting, listening to that irritating music. And that's just the ordinary days, what about these days with all the rain.

God bless the speakerphone.

me: Dial
them: 30 minutes of that d@mn tune
them: "Hello Telkom Fault Reporting, its not our fault, how may I help you".
me: detailed explanation of how the fault is not my equipment
them: you'll have to:-
- Reboot your router
- contact your ISP
- Reboot your computer
- check your wiring
<time passes>

If they will invest to replace those 50+ years old underground cables, there shouln't be so many weather related problems.....

He advises customers that once they have obtained a reference number after reporting a fault, they do not need to call Telkom again as the Company’s internal systems will manage all the faults and ensure that repairs are done

Am I the only one that doesn't get all warm and fuzzy about that statement?

Telkom-speak for "We don't want to be bothered again, you horrible little customer!"

BadWeather is affecting fixed line infrastucture?

Thank God for WiMAX (yes, you are quite correct, it is wireless) which seems to be unaffected by bad weather, according to reports.

Nope the Sat3 cable was only installed in 2001, Sat2 in 1993 and the sat1 in the 1960's.

While the sat3 carries a lot of our internet traffic along with the SAFE cable, I doubt the Sat1 cable is even in use today, unless some Telkom techie is using it for his own private use ;)
