R 69-00 unlimited Internet – a twist in the tale

Just how much can you download with a handheld browser? Can the blackberry browser download files and store it on a memory card or something? Can you hook up a GPS and use navigating software through this flat rate APN?

If all you can use this APN for is the browser and email client then R69p/m is quite a lot of money.

Doesnt matter how much I can download - it's care-free. Before this special I was happily paying r130 for the pleasure of the email and messaging - now the price has been halved and I now I get free browsing to boot. :)

I'm looking to get myself one of those Bluetooth grs dongles next. I live in PE so there's no real rush as getting lost is almost impossible. :) Still, it would be nice to have to geotag my photos.

So... who'll be more than happy to haxxor a Crackberry to allow unlimited Internet use? :D

And people will try...

But I already have unlimited internet use on my bberry

Not really bothered - just figured out I can upload to flickr so thats going to come in handy when I'm away from home.

The moment I read that first article I knew their was a catch, Vodacom like all big corporations who have no one to answer to (except their ANC shareholders)... can do and say what they want. I wish honesty in advertising would be more prevalent. :(

I'm going to have to disagree - the actual advertising (as opposed to any confusion that has arisen out of the forum threads) has been pretty straight forward.

EDIT - I do have a question for v3g -
What happens in November? Is it still r69?

This is the official response I just got back from Vodacom regarding the query i lodged yesterday to try and set up my 8310 as a modem.

Hi, Please be advised that Vodacom does not provide support to use Blackberry RIM handheld as a modem. Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care

I do not believe that it is possible to use the 8310 as a modem on the Vodacom network if you have one of the BB packages on running on your phone/SIM.

This is really pathetic

It would seem then that this recent myadsl article is not correct in that the 8310 can not be used as a modem on the Vodacom network.
If this is not the case then i challenge them to help me get my 8310 working as a modem. If fact has anybody been able to use theirs as a modem i think not.

Just because they dont support it doesnt mean it doesnt work - if it did then I wouldn't be able to use my 8100 would I? ;)

Unfortunately you dont have a mac so there's little use in my walking you through the procedure I used but it did involve the computer telling the phone to use the internet apn instead of the blackberry one.

Now, I'm just speculating but if you drill down into the phones settings you could try changing the apn there instead.

I think that there is maybe some kind of difference between the 8310 and 8100 ;)

already tried changing the apn on the phone - no luck :(

Gonna try the VMCLite software and if that does not work then maybe gonna start/launch some kind of "X Prize" if someone can get this working on my phone - i have wasted far to much time on it.

And unlike many similar international offerings, Vodacom has no ‘fair usage’ policy restricting users to a certain amount of data per month.
Yeah but most if not all of those offerings don't limit you to browsing on the device only so you can actually use what you pay for.

Say what? :D

Internet or browsing and email?

EDGE:
236.8kb/s / 8 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 = 71.454GB for networks only supporting 4 timeslots.
GPRS:
53.6kb/s * 324000 = 16.17372GB
GPRS+:
80kb/s * 324000 = 24.13988GB

No idea what happens in November, have asked the BB team and also to make the statements more clear.
Please also ask them about using the 8310 as a modem on the R2/MB APN. Because I have tried everything and nothing works? Thx

It's about device exclusivity.

At this stage (end October) other operators world wide will have access to the 8310. However, they still need to do TA, and get the stock. Practically, Vodacom will probably enjoy exclusivity in country for weeks after.

And the monthly charge of r69? Is that here to stay?
