Multichoice plays hardball

Lovely, another company on my cancel service list.

How on earth does Multhichoice think they will keep subscriptions with poor service and poorer attitude.

Other than sports, that by the way is broadcast in shocking picture quality, there is NOTHING worth my 550 rands. And hopefully soon you will learn that lesson by lousing 50% of your subscriber base..

SAY NO TO DstV

The company will continue to take actions against parties who are copying our EPG for purposes of transferring, and pirating or copying our channel providers content,” Multichoice concluded.

Translated:

We will attack anyone trying make the consumers lives easier or use a bit of initiative and we will bully you into submission if we just as smell a hint of competition....this is South Africa where we don't tolerate behaviour that might affect our monopolistic bottom line!

Multichoice acted like a silly child in this instance.

You cannot bar content information in hope of possibly stifling people copying content. They will copy if they want to copy and broadcasters need to step off the idea that they can restrict their content once broadcasted, even on an encrypted frequency. Whether folks copy to tape or digitally, if they want to copy, they will copy.

This is the 21st century for God's sake! I think broadcasters are in for a nasty surprise.

Don't delay us! We want to see what people in America see. If you give us a cool series more than a year after the broadcast in the USA, the chances are, savy web users will have heard of it the day after it's US launch and have finished the series twice before you idiots show it. If you want to be a premiere television station in the 21st century, give us same day or same week series viewing as our cousins in the USA and elsewhere.

We know you know that our viewing appreciation is largely the same as our US cousins, which is why you check if something is a hit before bringing it here. The sad reality is, this is not good enough anymore Multichoice. You will have to be snappier!

Where are series like Greek on your tv offerings? It is old news already! COME ON!!!

Let people develop their own habbits around your content. Only folks with Multichoice offerings would use that anyway, so stop peeing your pants!

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SERIES DOWNLOAD ON ANY TORRENT WITH AN MNET or MNET SERIES LOGO ON IT!!!

Relax, people are not using low resolution Multichoice to make distributions of series...

They would rater use stuff from the WB, ABC, NBC etc...

From the horses mouth so to speak.

So, Multichoice, do your job, allow your customers some choice and shut the **** up!

I agree, but i dont think these new guys coming in are going to make much of a differents. Ive got enough movies & tv series to keep my busy for years.

To me honest what does the most of use watch on DSTV. for the R550 that we pay

1. Mnet, MM1 & MM2
2. Series
3. M-TV
4. MK89
5. Discovery, National, Crime & History and Travel
6. Supersport.

Now if i only watch those channel do i really need to be paying R550

Im just looking at the new anime channel and then im cancelling my DSTV. Rather look at quality torrents

Multichoice’s General Manager for Corporate Affairs, Jackie Rakitla, says that her company has the responsibility to protect itself from instances which may compromise the integrity of its broadcasting platform.

What exactly does 'compromise the integrity of its broadcasting platform' mean, and just how exactly am I going to do that?

The statement should perhaps have read:
'Has the responsibility to make sure that everyone buys and uses only multichoice equipment and maximises the revenue and profit for multichoice'.

I mean heaven knows most of the programs are repeats already. And what happens if you plug a video recorder so you can watch a programme later - illegal too? Mandatory requirement that you buy a PVR?

Don't watch it only encourages them. It's poor content, poor quality and expensive - you can rent a lot of DVDs for R550. Unfortunately if you are a sport nut you're stuck with the (you could go to a bar to watch, but then you have to factor in beer costs, and R550 starts sounding cheap:D)

Its the last bit of "integrity" the company has left.

Regarding the actual EPG data, I believe there are two sets of legal precident out there. I recall reading a precident (american I believe) whereby the fact that EPG data is public domain (published in articles + common knowledge), then you can't stop people from using it. I think thats how the TiVo's can actually work there.

The second precident is Australian, and takes a different approach, copyrighting. The actual EPG information itself is public domain and can't be copyright. HOWEVER, the catalogue of this information, the entire EPG guide posted as a single XML file, in an HTML page, can be copyright.

Lets face facts.... they're scared of competition for their PVR hardware, thats what they're trying to protect, under the guise of "piracy prevention". If I was really that dead set on pirating content, Multichoice, I wouldn't bother with your antiquated content complete with logo...

Small Print: I am not a lawyer, so don't view the above as legal advice in any shape or form.

MultiChoice would like to reiterate that our broadcast content is intended only for transmission to our set top box, and not for transfer thereafter, to any other third party set top box/ device in which our encryption / AC software is not present, as we cannot guarantee that it will not be copied or pirated,” said Rakitla.
Like for instance a Video recorder? Are they trying to say you may not record programmes with anything other than a PVR?

One suspects the MC feels itself under threat from devices such as Tivo.

Their PVR, while being a useful device has suffered with major problems since inception, not the least of which has been the inability to record programs in a consistant way. One has often had the wrong progam or partial programs recorded due to problems with EPG. One only need look at the EPG thread on their web site.

Maybe they know that their EPG data is not as accurate as they would like. Thus, by threatening people with legal action, if it is used outside of MC's domain, they draw the attention away from their useless EPG data.

Remember, monopolies don't innovate, and will do anything to protect "their" market. It is sad, but I think they truly believe that they are providing a excellent service. Like Telkom, they know we have nowhere to go if you want to view certain shows.

When bandwidth prices goes down, MC is going to feel the effect, as more people will start to acquire there content from the net.

Piracy

All I can say is that Multichoice is making there problem my problem. I do not accept that. There USB port is inactive and there EPG is unavailable because paying subscribers are going to pirate.

They don't have any good content anyway.

Top programming like Prison Break as an example are available long before they are broadcast locally for piracy, so what the hell are they worried about.

I guarantee that if Telkom launches there pay TV an make EPG available, I will most definitely move because the high amount I paid for a PVR and what they have limited me to is shocking.

They are so busy trying to protect their precious EPG data that they have managed to vak it all up.

UEC makes **** tech and this is why they are going over to PACE for HD tech.

But of course PACE has to mod their Open TV platform so as to work with DSTV EPG.

DSTV one word for you - GAMMA

AVR

Is it just me or are their stated reasons for preventing this more deluded than the insane rantings of the music labels?

Forget petitions. Get subscribers to cancel.

Personally I think they're only trying to save on PVR sales. With a PC and the electronic program guide the only thing you cannot do is have two channels running at the same time. Recording etc can be handled by the Media Center.

so whats to stop me doing a scrap, hosting it somwhere overseas , who they gonna send their little lawyer letters to?
