Personally I think they're only trying to save on PVR sales. With a PC and the electronic program guide the only thing you cannot do is have two channels running at the same time. Recording etc can be handled by the Media Center.
I think that the saddest fact of all is that most people who have Media Center PC, etc. also have MC PVRs.
I use my MCE PC for a whole lot more than just watching DSTV programs. I use it to watch DVDs, listen to music (legally owned music, that is), enjoy funny videos sent via e-mail, view photos taken with my own camera, listen to FM Radio. I do all of this in my living room together with my family using one single remote.
The point I'm trying to make is that I like the fact that I can do all of this with a single device. MCs PVR CAN NOT do it all. In fact, it can do only one of these functions and not that well either.
While I was using Colin’s EPG Data it was easy for me to select the programs I wanted to record and I ended up recording a lot more programs to watch over weekends for when I had the time to watch them. Now, without the EPG, I’ve only scheduled the 3 programs I follow to record and I don’t watch anything else.
My exposure to advertising has gone down dramatically (maybe not such a bad thing
MC knows that their product does not compete and is doing everything they can to protect their crappy service. They are doing exactly what every other monopoly in this country is doing.
