Search engine optimisation

Doesn't an SEO company want to advertise here now?

The thing that worries me about hiring an SEO company is how do you measure the results?

If I search for the "right" keyword now my site is number 1 on google... It obviously just depends on what you search for...

It would be interesting to see what percentage of hits each search engine brings to MyADSL... for my site it breaks down as follows

Google 98%
MSN 1%
Others 1%...

quite sad that isn't it... I remember earlier this year Yahoo and MSN combined used to give me about 30-40% of my SE hits...

Google is far better than other so called search engines.

Just because it's the most popular doesn't automatically mean it's better
No, I think it *really* is better. Plus there is no way I'm waiting for the freakin yahoo portal to load every time I want to check something. The yahoo searchbox option in FF is rather nice though (But I still use the google one).

Google has messed up its search algorythm in the last 12 months. I use it at least 20 times a day and the revelance of at least 50% of the results it totally ridiculas. Regardless its still way above every other search engine...Just hope they can sort there stuff out...

Google is definitely the most popular, if not the best, search engine. Their brand recognition is bar none. Most webmasters will tell you that the largest majority of their SE traffic comes from Google, provided that their sites rank reasonably well in the SERPS.

Well guys and girls i guess its time i start to put down some words again.
SEO is not a extra anymore. Its a full time job.

I have been involved with some of the best SEO guys around. SEO will only really take off in this country come 2008-2010 when we have the telecoms infrastructure to back new businesses.

BTW the front article doesn't give a just writeup on SEO at all. Its far more involved then that and there alot of other factors that are more important then inserting the right pieces of code. Content is king atm with the new algos that google and other such engines are using.

I would say that its a field that not many people know about fully. Lets just say there isn't alot of interest in it just yet.

If you want more info on the topic at hand you should know where to find me.

There's other search engines than Google?

One thing to watch out for with these SEO companies, is that they don't use black-hat, round the back, dark-alley techniques to try and further your site. A SEO, should basically, just improve the content structure, accessibility, and content-to-keyword relations...

I agree with snoopy - SEO isn't well understood in SA. Meanwhile it is a huge industry in the US and Europe. I suspect we don't have the internet traffic volumes or advertising spend to make it 'n big industry. This should increase going forward, but I doubt if it will become a really big industry any time soon (maybe only when the whole of Africa gets onto the internet train, and that could be decades).

I'm not always too impressed with Google results - especially lately some of their top results for keywords that I'm watching are "spammy" and inapproporiate. But then there's so many good features to Google - for instance, to get SA only results on Yahoo and MSN is a real trick, whereas Google immediately takes you to google.co.za and lets you get SA results only.

As a result, SEO is all about Google. It's going to be a big thing here.

SEO is tricky. Some of the things done by companies that are less than honest can actually hurt Search Engine rankings.

To offer SEO services and bump a customers rankings up
in Google is a long tedious job. You really have to understand
Search Engines go to searchenginewatch.com

I used a package called Webposition http://www.webposition.com/
and then you enter your keywords and check against your website
and your competitors website. As someone mentioned its a fulltime
job to check your ranking in Google, Yahoo, Altavista, MSN.

Now to try and get visitors to your site thats another mission
as I run max 15000 visitors per month and growth is pretty stagnant.

* Offer something of value - competition (who can refuse winning something)
* Links from external web pages too make a difference in drawing visitors
* Website "stickiness" to keep on drawing repeat visitors back to your website ie Mybroadband (perfect example). If your website appears in the newspaper ie one day I got 1200 visitors versus the usual 400, because of a newsworthy event where the House at Kaaimans Pass was slipping down at a few centimeters a day.

Referrals from Search Engines:
- Google 759 (Google still at the TOP)
- Windows Live 223
- Yahoo! 25
- Google (Images) 14
- MSN Search 8

- Windows Live 1802
- MSN Search 1594
- Google (cache) 486
- Yahoo! 257
