Dealer madness or this normal?

There are a few on AutoTrader for R619k so there is enough wiggle room or reason to walk away. This dealer is taking the pi$$.

Also, do you not want to defer your purchase for a few months and buy a ‘25 model in ‘26? They should depreciate to around 560-580k (or even more) retail by Feb/March next year.

Also; in this hybrid category have you considered the BYD Sealion 6 and a GWM Tank 300 hybrid that can also be had for similar money. And if this is just for fuel economy then there are also the Germans, Koreans and Japs you can look at if you want to dabble outside of Chinese.

December would be the best time to buy and make negotiations as they know the year roll over will see them struggle to sell the “old car” but this only works if it’s not a super popular model.

Sealion 6 is a PHEV isn’t it?

May very well be in your best interest to wait until February.

My previous car they tried to fleece me with smash&grab and mats as well and I was like nope those were in and on the car when I drove it.

I haven't bought a car in a long while but I had thought On The Road fees was your licensing and registration, tank of fuel etc.
If registration is billed for separately, what exactly goes into that R8k?

These days it’s the licensing, registration, number plates and in many cases even the PDI.

And then things like smash and grab, car mats and the cheap bottle of wine or gift box and that big red ribbon on delivery they make you pay for.

And then bolt-on insurance products.

All with profit margin. Number plates for R1500.

Yes I bought earlier the year and the on the road fees was R6k and it included everything. Licence, registration, roadworthy, new number plates and even a service.
OK the service was not included, but a week after I got it the service light came on and the dealership was so nice they paid for the service(R6.5k)

Don't bank on the fuel ... they give it to you with the minimum amount of fuel in, and also the battery in this case not charged :)

You know you can buy a very decent Merc or Bm secondhand for that money? It will also outlast that Chinesium several times over.
This^. They doing him a favour. Now he can go buy a proper car. The only chinese car I'd maybe bet money on would be Haval/GWM. Not only have they been around for ages now, but those I know with Havals have no issues. Here @Neuk_ had issues with his Chery, my friend that bought a new one 2 years ago has lots of warning lots on his already.

Indeed, only place that gave me fuel was get worth, its part of their policy. They did change policy to R500 fuel, it use be a full tank. I purchased touareg from which had 100l tank and they did fill it up before delivery!

Well exactly, except in this instance most of those items (licensing, registration, smash and grab) are billed in addition to the OTR fees, like they double dipping.
It's weird, human psychology and all that, but if it were me, even though I'm spending R600k on a car, don't try and nickel and dime me for for a few extra bucks. I'd walk away and probably pay more for the same car somewhere else where they made the OTR fees like 2 grand lower but it included everything. Cutting my nose and all that.

Oh yeah I forgot the fuel which costs the same for a brand new car as a second hand one but for “reasons” you never get a full tank unless you fight them for it.

Smash and grab has always been a separate optional extra as they send it off to a third party.

I’ve had this discounted to cost every time after making a phone call and getting a comparable quote.

Otherwise just take it in and do it yourself afterwards but that’s its own ballache.

The license and registration not being contained in the on the road portion I would fight about.

So I googled a bit, apparently they have to give you at least a quarter tank :)
But like damn, I'm spending 600 grand or whatever - fill the dang thing! You're gonna have someone drive away with a bit of a sour taste in their mouth over R700 say.

Edit - my last car, there was a garage just opposite, salesman drove with me, paid to fill the car. Now I know I actually paid for it in those fees but just made me feel like I scored a small bonus

My sales person at Haval fully agreed with me on the extra fees and I told him outright I’m not paying you so you can give me a **** bottle of wine with Haval branding on.

He ended up giving me two bottles of wine out of his own pocket.

At least they sent the car for a proper valet, paint touch up and ceramic coating as part of those on the road fees and I got a properly full tank of petrol as well.

Try a few dealers, can save any easy 5-10k shopping around.

In this case, especially as it's a demo, I'd check the thing doesn't have smash and grab already; seen complaints and dealer "mistakes" about this one before.
