Is Lasik worth it?

Yeah but as someone who is kak bang of things medical (must be a phobia) it wasn't bad

They clamp your eye so you can't blink which is what I was scared off. Moving and ****ing the whole thing up

You can see some bright light zaps and smell some burning but it actually wasn't all that major. All over pretty quickly. I did have something to calm my nerves before otherwise I would never have even walked in there
 
Any recommendations for doctors in PTA ?
 
Ok, so I have now started down this varifocal wormhole.

Went to get my eyes tested for new glasses, was told no I now need varifocals, ok no problem. Got these ridiculously expensive lenses and got myself a rayban frame as I have to this point just used a frame for years on end and just replaced the lenses when needed.

Drove home with these things, amazing drive, watched some tv, oh need to tilt my head to focus and not the whole screen stays in focus but most of it it high clarity, I can live with that.

Things below my chin are also in focus if I tilt my head right. I no longer have peripheral vision close by but I can handle that, I can actually thread a needle again and read the tiny manuals that come with tech and meds.

The next morning is the first time I try to use a pc, an excel sheet no less, Find I have to tilt my head to the sky with my nose pointed at the screen and then I only see the cell I am pointing my nose at clearly, the rest just loses focus the further from that tiny focal point it gets unless I move my head.

Tried gaming that night and pretty much gave up on gaming in front of the pc because zero peripheral vision, only thing that is in focus on my 2k 27" screen is the 3-4cm circle around the exact point my nose is pointed at.
I now have Moonlight on a pi behind the tv and bought a remote so I can play some games on the tv from a distance.

I went to the optometrist the next morning, no you will need another pair of glasses with a different type of varifocal lens to be able to use your computers and vertical screens at the distances you require and it will only be another R10k or so

I am getting this new pair at another R8500 (after discount) simply so that I can work and play games but yea, I think it's time for lasek.

I went to the eye institute in 2023, they told me I can only get laser surgery after age 55 but here is an eyedrop prescription that forces you to come back to us twice a year at the cost of R1000 for every room you walk into while you are in the building (usually between 4 to 5 rooms).

I went to Mpudulle Eye Centre last year and was told he will only help when when I have my first cataract.

Anyway, I am done with this **** and want corrective eye surgery now (I turn 50 next month).

What is the best option within a 90 minute drive from Pretoria that will actually help me and not try milk me for as long as possible?
 
I had a similar procedure done to both my eyes when I was about 24 (14 years ago). This was not LASIK but PRK. Similar concept, eye prep is just different. And recovery process 3-4months, for PRK.

I had trouble seeing far, but near sights were perfect. No history of cataracts and other stuffs.

R8k per eye at Cape Eye Hospital in Bellville, CPT.

So far so good still after all these years.

Another pair of glasses? You are paying for your optometrists incompetence. I have multifocals, and while you do need to ensure certain angles of viewing, it's the marking they do on the frames with mock lenses (to ensure the centering of your vision and the melding of the multifocal lense portions) that is vital. If they get this wrong, it leads to the issues you seem to be experiencing.

The whole point of multi-focals is to ensure you don't need different glasses for different viewing activities.

Apparently there are different types of varifocals and because I mentioned I will be going for my drivers renewal soon they gave me a prescription that is apparently better for driving.

These things are costing me over R10k a year now, LASEK is around R50k all in then I can go get some reading glasses from clicks if I need them. I also suspect that this your head is on a tripod and you have to point your nose for focus is just going to end up making my eyes get weaker even faster so yea, I want my eyeballs to point at something for it to be in focus near or far instead of this xyz triangulation rubbish.

I still think its bogus from your optometrist. Multifocals are to cater for these different scenarios. You go to Specsavers by any chance?

I have been playing around with the glasses on my face and they angle they sit at after what you wrote and after doing some googling, It seems the frame/arms are also not at optimal angle as when I have the arms around half way down my ears I get better peripheral vision and more natural focus. I'll get a friend of mine that works with this stuff to bend them for me, will avoid visionworks for the foreseeable future.
 
So after lots of tampering with these multifocals, They seem to be optimised as much as they can be.
They are much better now for everyday life, Can focus on faces without looking like a 14'th century monarch speaking with a peasant, I can see the road and my cars console without major head movements and all the mirrors without major Y movement.

I spent lots of time researching and calling and asking questions of AI's, optometrists and humans and yea it basically boils down to this:

Right now I need a second pair of glasses and I'll wait for LASEK till I get my first cataract or turn 55 or get impulsive, whichever comes first.

So spent R8700 on a secondary pair of glasses for pc/office and specified Hoyalux Workstyle 3 lenses.
Should have them Monday latest but hopefully by Friday, I miss gaming on my pc instead of the whole Sunshine, moonlight and raspberry Pi setup I have made for gaming on the tv with a controller.

Presbylasik might be worth looking into for people over 40 with myopia/hyperopia and presbyopia. It addresses them all but is damn expensive

I have astigmatism and age has robbed me of near sight, Also every time I go to eye institute type places they test my eyes in some machine, find something they don't really seem to understand then tell me I have glaucoma and spend 20 minutes explaining it to me but then they put me into a different machine then tell me I do not have glaucoma but here is a prescription that guarantees you will be back in 6 months for whatever the hell we saw in the first machine that we obviously don't know what it is and our machines can not explain to us.

Oh, I also occasionally sleep with one eye open and that may sound like a metallica song but in reality it just means my eye is extremely dry and painful for half the day after I wake up. I was given over the counter eyedrops for that by the guy from Mpudulle Eye center (he went through the same you have glaucoma, another test, you don't have glaucoma thing the eye institute did but he told me he would look when I get my first cataract and he already has me under the knife, at least he was honest about it and did not try to turn me into a bi-annual income source).
