Is Lasik worth it?

Check with your medical aid - I got it done free at Westville Life hospital ~10 years ago. There's usually an optometry basket that accumulates in your medical savings or something like that.

I have no health issues so just opted for a Hospital Plan with Discovery in the case I have an accident. I do not have medical aid. I figured it will be cheaper to just buy over the counter meds when I need it in cash.

Would you say it has been worth it though?

I have bad eyesight and am considering LASIK so that I can finally stop wearing glasses. Has anyone done it and is it worthwhile? Also, if you can suggest affordable places around JHB where I could possibly go, it would be appreciated. I just phoned a place who said I can expect to pay around R30-R40k. Is it possible to get it done for R15-20k?

There is quite a substantial Lasik thread.

I paid around 20k many years ago so there's no ways you're going to be spending that now. On the plus side it has more than paid for itself in terms of my glasses spend over the years even though the MA bastards paid for ****all

Hi.

I also had really bad eye sight and opted for LASIK surgery. This was probably 4 or 5 years ago.

Cost me somewhere in the region of R24k back then (in Cape Town)

I would say go for it if you by the means.

Here's the thread. A most definite worth it from my side

I authorised and sent the bill to Discovery and they paid, luckily. Was on Classic then.

Yes, yes and absolutely yes. No more irritating specs that constantly leave marks on my nose, able to wear whichever sunglasses I like, it's been the best feeling of freedom

Probably double that amount now and also remember that they can't guarantee when your eyes will start regressing.

Yeah and I assume it will be even more for me since my eyesight is pretty bad. I can't even recognize faces if I am in the same room as someone and do not have specs on.

Nah, the fee doesn't go up according to your vision correction needed. It only increases if you need it done quick or such

not sure if the dude was high as a kite, was watching a whistling diesel video where he said lasik is bad,
cant find it now, dude described the feeling of having his eye zapped like a stove trying to ignite over and over.

not sure if I want to do that to my eyes.

Everyone seems to be quoting between R30k-R50k. I phoned around. The cheapest I got so far was R26k as a starting price.

It is definitely not that bad.

It is actually painless. The only thing I felt was the pressure of the clamp thingy holding my eyes open.

You do, however, smell a bit of "burn" though

And yes, this surgery is done while you are awake ( hence the clamps)

For something like your eyesight, it might be better not to go for the cheapest quote...

I don't know much about this and am willing to do a bit of research. My budget at first without doing research was R15-R20k (considering I don't have medical aid) but it does look like this will be a long-shot.
