Anybody successfully converted a SIM to an eSIM yet? What's your experience?

Hi Wilbur,

I recently got my sim for my iPhone, but im struggling to activate my iMessage with my e sim.
The physical cards one activates, but the e sim number immediately says activation failed.

Did both your numbers activate on imessage?

I look forward to your response

TIA
Hi LHSwanepoel, I haven't added any of my current eSim's to iMessage, sorry. Have you tried adding the relevant number to the eSim in settings? They tend not to do this by default.

Trying to activate an eSIM for my number that is on MTN SuperFlex and its not working.

Im traveling and would like to buy the iPhone 18 Pro and trade in my old iPhone. The new iPhone doesnt have a physical SIM card. Dont want to be without my SA number for OTP’s etc.

Any suggestions please?

Try during office hours so you can call MTN to assist if the website doesn’t work. eSIM transfer doesn’t work so you’ll need the physical sim to get a OTP to move it to the 18 Pro. MTN call centre can also send you the eSIM but it is a bit of a process tbh.

Are you travelling domestically or internationally? I might be wrong but, given how problematic mtn can be, I can’t see it working without the phone being able to access the mtn network.

Traveling internationally and will be for a few years, so essentially “emigrated.” But I don’t want to lose my SA MTN mobile number, as I use it for banking, financial OTPs, etc. and I’ll need it when I eventually return to SA.

I actually bought the 18 Pro already and decided against trading in the old one for now. Currently, the old iPhone is sitting plugged into a wall just to receive these text messages, which seems like such a waste!

So, I’m trying to figure out a better solution here. Any suggestions are welcome.

This should be a simple sim swap, however, since you are on superflex (essentially prepaid), you’ll have to physically go to a store to get it done. They need to Rica an eSIM then initiate a sim swap on their system.

Not the news you wanted, however, I tried various methods. I’m not sure you’ll get a sim swop done without being physically present.
I believe it’s possible on contract.
