Hi Guys

Is there a way to get a free 087 number and can that number be called
from overseas

Thanks
DD

Yes, sniff some traffic from somebody's Vox cradle, get their key, log into the cradle, and copy the SIP settings.

Then log into it with your softphone, as well as your free sipdiscount demo account, and try to call it from sipdiscount.

Do you really think Telkom or ICASA or anyone is going to hand out free telephone numbers? Get Voipbuster or something, and call to a one of the 15 free countries....

Get an 087 (and other numbers too) from http://www.yakyak.co.za

I tried telfree a while ago. Left a sour taste in my mouth :)

There are plenty of providers out there, both established and up-and-coming. Find one that suits your budget and see how it goes.

087 numbers are blocked for incoming international calls - according to Vox

That just means that they haven't got an international interconnect.

It is more complicated then that. You can interconnect with one or more international carriers, but for your numbers to be globally routed, all networks need to know how to find you. Number routing doesn't happen automatically, like a with IP. eg. If you interconnect with BT, you have to hope that slowly but surely all the networks they interconnect with route to you via them.

This is complicated by the fact that many international networks assume that Telkom SA will provide them with a direct route to ALL OF SA +27. Not realising that Telkom actually don't cover all of SA (they exclude +27 87), these networks may not put in place alternate routes for these numbers.

So whilst it is possible to set up international interconnects, the only relatively quick and truly effective way to ensure your 087 numbers are globally reachable is if Telkom SA route them.

Given Telkom's intransigence, it seems like most VoIP networks will have to go the slow and tedious route of interconnecting with as many of the hundreds of global networks out their as they can. This is going to be rather tricky considering that most of these networks won't interconnect with you unless you have at least 1 million minutes per month to exchange with them.
