100Mbps Cape broadband plans

So, seems I am moving to Cape Town sometime in the next 8 years...

mmm

Maybe I will end up moving to Cape Town :D

Haha or ill just wait till the Sandton area gets something similar.

Although I think more than 10Mbps is a bit overkill for a home connection

ha ha my brother (not South African) thought the same last year. But that was before he got FtH. Now he can't understand how he managed on a 15mbit line which seldom did sync at more then 10 (cable internet).

Glad to see that a plan is in action already.

Nice to see government sticking to their promises. WC really is a country on its own within South Africa

I think you are on to something here--a perfect setting to do a social experiment: compare governance in WC vs. rest of SA (will have to adjust for GDP per capita though).

what are u talking about 10mpbs overkill please man...
that what i current have on my Home ADSL . d/l = 1mbps 1gig done in +- 17mins

DownStream Connection Speed 10015 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 1019 kbps

Faster is always Better Man. ;) ;)

Maybe they should just join a WUG... ;)

its actually going to be a wug from what I read...

It is understood that the province will be negotiating bulk bandwidth deals for national and international bandwidth to drive down the cost of Internet access for government, the private sector and residential subscribers.

Wow... who would have thought ;)

By the sounds, Telkom wont be involved? (besides under seas cables)

The government removing Telkom from the picture and providing infrastructure themselves?

Hope the WC gov can get it right... first they need to pay for Green Point Stadium... else they just going to impose another rates increase to fund the project... the budgets got to come from somewhere... so DA let's see the funding model!

Telkom's days are numbered. they already dying a slow death. with fines, being sued left right and centre and losing business day by day. i think the only option for Telkom is to sell their core infrastructure to the state and then every isp can compete on the same level.

just my 2c

Johnston highlighted that the 100Mbps connectivity speed promise should be seen as a target rather than a fixed value which will be achieved. “The 100Mbps speed is neither here nor there. It just gives us a target towards which we can work,” said Johnston.

I don't like the sound of that. But I have more faith in the DA than, you know, that seriously underperforming political party.

But wait, let me not derail here.

Ok. A good start, I sincerely hope that they follow this through.

Also please be reasonable and leave kayelitsha last, they should still be fine with telkom's super awesome 4mbit connections until the people who know how to use it has proper broadband.

2020? Really? Thats 8 years from now. Telkom are already trialling 20mbs. One of my clients is syncing @ 15mbps. So 100mbps in 8years time really doesnt seem that impressive. By that time the rest of the world will be on 10gbps ftth

So the actual speed will likely be 384bkps.

They have been "trialling" 20mbs for ages and did the same for 10mbs... very few people have it. 4mbs was launched 6 years ago and still isn't the standard, most people can't even sync at 1mbs.

In 8 years time I doubt that Telkom will be anywhere near having 20 mbs as a standard, nevermind being able to offer 50 mbs.

Also 8 years is the full roll out, if you read nicely you will see that they will start relatively soon. This means that there will be people with access to this long before 8 years
