Hi

I live in Sunninghill and I am having a major problem with Telkom, I have a 4 mbps line and have been inquring about the 10 mbps line for about a year now.

A few months ago I was on the Telkom 10 mbps ADSL checker and it informed me that my line was 10mbps capable.
I phoned Telkom to increase my speed to 10 mbps, they said that my exchange can only handle a maximum of 4mbps and they have no idea why it cannot be increased to 10 mbps.
Telkom then say they will get a specialist to contact me who never does.

Any suggestions guys.

I don't trust the checker at all. It tells me the same - qualify for 10, but I can't even get close to 3 currently!

Just be glad that you can get 4Mbps with a low latency. So many people are now sitting with like 400ms+ latencies and under 1Mbps download speeds (on 4-10Mbps connections) ever since Telkom allowed other people in their area to get 10Mbps ADSL.

I get this.

They say my line is 4mbps max which is bull.

i was so excited when i first thought i would get 10 mb.

You will never get 4Mbps on a 4Mbps line, there are overheads involved in transmitting network traffic which eat into the maximum speed you can achieve.

Theoretically with no overheads one should be able to get 512KBps on a 4Mbps line (4096Kbps/8=512KBps), real world download speeds on a 4Mbps line is normally around 430KBps which is (430KBps X 8=3440Kbps).

So there's nothing wrong with your line nor what anyone has promised you with regards to having a 4Mbps line.

that exchange checker means blow all... its a PR tool linked to one DB but it doesnt take all the factors into account.

so I ask with tears in my eyes, what IS the point exactly?

Im lucky enough to be running 10mbps but I have more issues than Im used to with my 4mbps... Having said that, we were having ALL SORTS of issues this weekend with international latency....

Cant play HoN with 500ms ping, its ridiculous!!! :(
