This is great ....Thought just got of the phone with them..
And they will be needing more user before they can offer this service...around another 15 so did the helpdesk say

So.......Just letting you all know

Optional Package 1: Standard 64k PPTP Service
MegaLAN will provide each of its users a guaranteed 64k package that is completely separate of Telkom's ADSL offering, whilst still using the same infrastructure as normal ADSL. This basically ensures to our users that:

There is no 3GB (or any) CAP or Limitation on your monthly download limit.
Speeds are constant during most of the day, and at MegaLAN's worst peak time still allot better compared to Telkom's ADSL offering.
Private Internal Static IP Addresses are provided to users.
Optional Package 2: Static 128k PPTP Service
You got ADSL to do private hosting, but Telkom had other plans? Not a problem. Our 128k PPTP Service provides our ADSL subscribers the option to sign up for 128k guaranteed bandwidth on the same principal and features as the 64k package above, with the exception that we will give you one static IP address that is live, and usable via the Internet. Get your mail and web servers running from your office without any worry about when your site will be available and when it wont.

Our 64K Optional Package is an additional R199PM, whilst the 128K Static is selling for R350PM. A small amount extra to pay for the guarantees you always wanted, without any restrictions in regards to what you can download, how much you can download, or when you can download it!

Excellent news, this is just what I've been waiting for.

Where do we sign up?

:)

Hi jgoosen,

I phoned East Coast Access about a similar offer, 64k diginet which was at a price of about R1,400 per month for use of their VPN. I see that these prices a far better than ECA. Nice to see this, although I still can't wait to see what the new offering will be from the next wireless company.

I just spoke to megalan as well.

Seems like they suit my requirements.
If I understood it correctly - I keep my ADSL
and pay them R199.00 per month.

I get 64K with no CAP with the potential of 20GB
per month download.

This suits me fine AND [:)] [8D] [:p] [:X]
I can browse YES I can browse internationally
right now I am still shut out of the internet
with my ADSL. Who shut me out ??

I'm a bit confused. Do you still need to pay for an ISP account over and above the optional packages or do they include ISP charges?

I really want to investigate this Telkom thing of
the CAP. They have targeted for 250 000 - 300 000
ADSL users. WOW So I went here (link courtesy of megalan)

http://www.safe-sat3.co.za

I am told that Telkom have about 20Gig of the 120Gig cable
system.

I would really like to know much more about the capacity
that Telkom have for their ADSL "service". Some simple
maths tells me that there is a big problem on the horizons.

Also it would be interesting to compare ZA with India and
South Korea for example - what are they paying. I say all
of this because in the Telkom media release they use our
"situation" (I assume this to be geographical) as the basis
of their arguments and pricing structures.

Methinks something stinks

I would love to get a summary of the real picture from
someone who is close to it.

Paragraph 2 is very interesting indeed. Its' easy to say the cable has a 120GB Capacity, but frankly, it does not mean 120GB is actually used. All the reports I have seen on SAT3, expressed throughput as 120GB *ULTIMATELY*. There's a HUGE difference...

ULTIMATELY, I can get 6MB on my ADSL here as well, provided that Telkom removes the traffic shaping... What's the chances of that ever happening.. heh

Great , but now what happens to the rest of the bandwidth ? Sure you have no cap, but what is happening to the rest of the 512 ? The 512 my be capped but do you loose in altogether in favour of an 8th of the bandwidth ?

Its A vpn serice when you get capped you go ove to it:)....VPN Local so i will not be capped and their server rely international traffic to u

Whats the telephone number again ?

So basically you use your normal ADSL till you get capped then you use this system to allow a 64k connection internationally ? Doesn't effect local ADSL speed ? Is it regional dependant ? Do I need more hardware ?

If its more like a proxy that I can connect to that relays my international requests at 64k utilizing my local ADSL then gimme a pen and where do I sign my X [:)]

In reply to questions .

I contacted megalan on this number 0 8 6 1 1 1 0 0 0 0

I understood the following :

a. You keep your ADSL account, hardware everything as is.

b. No additonal hardware required.

c. Pay megalan R199.00 per month. Still pay your ADSL

d. You lose 512K bandwidth

e. 64K continuous, no dial-up, and NO CAP

g. megalan estimated that I could achieve 20GB per month
download. NO limit on downloads.

This offer suits me just fine - I don't need 7 days of
blazing speed and a shut out of the net.

Hope this answers all the questions.

PS I have nothing to do with megalan -
just found them when looking for
alternatives to Telkom.

And obviously, should you not be capped and thus want to try and get the full 512kb/s out of Telkom's ADSL offering. Not a problem. Simply deactivate the VPN, and all traffic will re-route via normal ADSL.

Should it become slow, simply activate VPN, and at least you can be sure of a 64 or 128k service. We've had a pretty good responce to our offering so far, and thus we should be making additional bandwidth available shortly to cary for the additional load (new lines may possibly be ordered on Monday to accommodate this). We've also received questions for possible higher rates than 128k. It will be possible, we simply need to ammend the pricing accordingly. It will however become relatively expensive for anything over 128, as it becomes more difficult to manage higher amounts of bandwidth.

Good to see there is finally a viable alternative.

Will definately be taking the option of Megalan I think [:D] - Reasonable pricing and sounds like a good deal (R199 [:D])- a good deal which Telkom cannot come up with because they probably don't want to give us a good deal.

Now it's only 10 users that they need. I've put my name down for the 256kb ppptp connection.

Cheers
Hilton

I can't get through to MegaLAN at all! Tried loads of times, no reply on 0861110000. Tried to look up their real number and still couldn't get through. Anyone got an alternate contact method (phone or email)?
I really want to get it set up soon as I've hit the 3GB cap on my account...

OK, just got through, they still say they need another 10 users...
If anyone else is interested you can email them on info at megalan.co.za

Just hit my cap while playing an mmorpg ... 0.003kbps :( now, my friend is gonna wait 10 days before I'll return.

This MegaLan offer sounds even better now. I'll be lookin into this.

Even at a guaranteed 64k I’ll be happy, and that 56k after you reach 3Gb limit is something Telkom should have had.

If anyone phones and they STILL say 10, we must be suspicious of the number not decreasing...
