171 Bikers caught speeding

Depending on what speed the car is going, I think the occupants of the car will also be in a world of hurt after a bike hits them at 200km/h.

Would be an interesting calculation by a physics dude.

Car @ 120 read rear ended by bike @ 200

Transfer of speed to car is 80 km
Biker will of course continue at 200, while bike will be going at 120 + (momentum change), but certainly less than 200!

Biker sails over car and goes splat, depending on where he ends up and motion of car and car drivers reflexises, the biker may very well have his squishy remains driven over too.

Question: What is the NETT change of momentum to the car? Assume regular mass of bike and car.

I doubt its more than 40km, my gut feeling is if the bike masses half of the car, then it will transfer half its velocity to the car.

Head on collision is off course a completely different story. 320km difference in velocity. Ouch.

Yeah, you'll have to use velocity in m/s (divide km/h by 3.6) and use the mass of the objects (in Newtons). If you assume that the driver is stuck to the bike it's a very simple calculation (if my high school physics is still intact)...

200 - 120 = 80 km/h difference.
80/3.6 = +/- 22 m/s.
22 * (200*10) = 44,000 something.

Not sure what that something is, but it seems useful.

I have no idea what that means.
If you committed suicide you are dead. If you survive, you did not commit suicide.
If you mean "attmepted suicide", then that IS a crime. And you will be charged.

Serious? Attempted suicide can be charged against u?
This some strange ass law, i better let my ex gf know before she tries it again :D

Ok fine my arguement suck, will travel at 10km over speed limit from now on :p

Just don't try to pass me at 250 km/h, I swerve when I get alarmed...
I can promise you that my 1.2 ton car can handle being hit by a 200kg bike at 250km/h, but can you?
If people decide to endanger others' lives, I'll endanger theirs. That's what insurance is for.

With that sort of attitude towards people passing you, dont ever be surprised, or complain if one day you become a victim of a some nutters road rage, or are shot at by an irrate biker ;)

I used to respect bikers - giving them space etc - but lately they seem never to have plates, enjoy making a lot of noise whilst travelling everywhere at high speed weaving like lunatics through the traffic!

Just note that I only have to move in my lane a few centimetres to the right and splash one biker.

Pls don't cry when I take off your mirror on my way past your car and you where just being spitefull ;)

I am trying to understand how someone travelling at high speed can rip a mirror off a car without causing them to lose control of their bike.
Simply WALKING past a door and hooking my jersey on a key can cause me to lose my balance, and thats at like 4km/h.

It's very difficult to draw while riding, especially from a shoulder holster under the jacket... :D

I've had people swerve out at me deliberately. Hope your mirrors have strong mounts.

I used to ride with mine butt out in the breast pocket of the jacket, far easier and handier , considering it was a Llama 44 with 6 inch Barrel.(make my day) :D
In the day, the chrome chain detered drivers of cars from pulling "sillies" -- 1 chain - 1 windscreen, or as someone else i knew, used to keep a few decent sized ballbearings in his jacket pocket.

I don't really have a problem with bikers. I do have a BIG problem with fsckers who:

a) Ride with their bright lights on, which is very distracting to traffic both oncoming and same direction. I don't buy that "it makes you aware" crap - it's distracting and more likely to cause accidents by blinding drivers.

b) Ride at the speed limit while weaving in traffic. I swear if somebody knocks my mirror through no fault of my own, I'll get off, shoot the back tyre and you can crash for all I care. Then I'll lay a charge against you for vandalism.

Otherwise no hassles ;) As long as your speed is in the absence of traffic, and nobody else but yourself will be injured (or nobody's property is damaged as a result of your actions) in the event of an accident, then I don't really have a problem.

The speed and the resistance of the mirror is the difference. When traveling past and I hold out my Gloved hand and smack the mirror very little to none resistance from the mirror. And the speed helps with the inpact. Remember that your weight is not enough to pull the door from it's mounting however at greater speed 1 of two things will happen

1. you'll tear your jacket and would only experience a small jerk
or
2. you'll take the door out of the mounting with the exact same jerk ;)

I saw a biker lob a metal object at a car once - cracked up the windscreen something awful. Good to know bikers are such a stand up bunch.

Heh, I'd love a biker to try smash my old BM's side mirror. I've been goosenecks with it.

With sufficient speed you hardly even feel the mirror. Problem is the metal mounts you get on certain 4x4s and older luxury cars. Can be hazardous.

My jacket has no external pockets, and besides, an Hk Usp is a bit big for most pockets anyway. Didn't buy a gun to shoot at people who annoy me in traffic, though one of the features I liked about the Usp is that it's still usable with gloves. Lot of guns just don't have that space in the trigger guard.

Ball bearings, mirrors, etc. will make people think twice before they try stupid stunts again. We're vulnerable. And think about this... if you shift out to collide, you've effectively tried to kill me, or at the least committed attempted assault. If you do hit me and I get up, you're in for charges. If I don't, you're guilty of murder.

He said another 171 speeding motorcyclists were caught on camera - as were 171 motorists.

Okay, I'm sick of waiting. When is someone going to mention this?

Quite interesting how this thread started with the notion that bikers have no regard for the law, now it seems like they enjoy antagonising hostile situations :P

Most bikers i have known, are stand up people, the difference is that most of the public dont always view them in that light, therefore, they often need to be a little rough.
Its actually stand up citizens, that give bikers a bad name. Because instead of leaving well enough alone, they are the ones who have the issues, not the bikers.
P.S. What did the driver do to entice the biker to that?

I have run a delivery driver on a motorcycle off the road before ....... you might be next.
Gee admission of guilt to a crime (possibly murder) and a threat all rolled into one. Nice people. NOT.
