1st Robovac suggestions

We were gifted a Taroma Robi 1 by my wife's uncle so getting it up and running in our house. Any tips or suggestions from the experienced?

Initial impressions:

  • Setting it up on the Tuya or Smart Life app is pretty straight forward but I have had issues with the robot dropping our IoT WiFi network and I have to re-add it.
  • It does pretty well navigating around our house, it can't get everywhere like the bedrooms and our sons play room due to level differences but it does fine for a robot without more advanced features like lidar.
  • Returning to the charge station is hit and miss, the algorithm it uses seems to send it around randomly until it gets close to the charging station at which point it somehow senses it is there and docks itself.
  • I can't find anyway to setup rooms, go zones, no go zones, carpet zones, etc. using the Tuya or Smart Life app which seems like a huge negative as I can't let the thing run amok with the mopping tank and pads or let it launch itself down the stairs in to our sons playroom.
  • We either have a very dirty house or our domestic hasn't done as good a job but it picks up a lot of dirt a lot of the time, admittedly we have a large house, a toddler, a baby and a dog so anything and everything gets in and around our house.
  • Carpets, once it is on the carpet it is a bit slow but fine, it sometimes has issues if there is a slight lift in the carpet as the rotating 'collector' brushes get stuck underneath and it can't move forward.

Would I buy one, not a chance, I'd rather spend double the money on something like the X20+ which has a lot more features and a better docking station. For now, I am enjoying playing around with it, we got it for free so I can't really complain.

You don't really need to spend double the money. The same amount will buy you a Xiaomi with lidar which solves most of your gripes.

But yeah the big docking station is a win, that is my only want after getting the s20+.

It's not to say the Xiaomi is perfect, mine sometimes goes senile and forgets it's maps

My x20+ has no issue with the map. Yes only one map for the whole house.

Even when the 8 month old goes over and pull it out of the dock. It goes into this new map discovery mode.

However, it eventually reset back the saved map with all the rooms and blocks I configured. Maybe the x20+ is improved more than just the docking station

Getting the x20+ tomorrow

Any feedback on whether a drop of non foaming floor cleaner is the way to go?

I’ve found it didn’t do much at all when I tried to add some.

Want to get their official stuff of Temu next time. Or some of those tablets.

For the dreame or xiaomi this is the stuff apparently. From a previous post in this thread

Check this out on takealot: Kärcher RM 536 Multi-Purpose Floor Cleaner Detergent 500ml

Is that what Karcher recommend for their own rebranded robot vacuum?

Worth a shot I guess since it’s not pricey at all, which is unusual for their products.

Unless the dilution is crazy.

****

Seems to be made for these.

I guess it could work.

The official Dreame stuff I found is this….and now I can’t find it and only this stuff.

Karcher option being cheaper and local I’ll give a try. Not that I’ve really felt it needs it but still.

I posted it originally in this thread. It adds a nice smell to the floor.

What’s the dilution like? How long does that bottle last?
Dilution is 10ml per 400ml. The x20 has a 4l tank. So you use 100ml per tank.

I was lazy and just used meta Ai on whatsapp to work it out. The calculations it showed seems correct. Tho that mean I would get 20l out of the 500ml bottle, yet the website state I should get 40l.

As for how long it last, really depends on how often you need to refill your clean water tank in the dock. That will be different for everyone.

Do you want to put floor cleaner in the robo vacuum?

This is not recommended.

If you have a dirty spot your vacuum can’t clean then just clean it yourself.
Or you could just spray a bit of floor cleaner on the spot and let the mop go over that.

There was a recent firmware update that addressed issues around maps. So if you haven’t opened the app in a while ( say your vacuum is on a schedule so you don’t have to ), open it up and have a look see if an update is available

Sure, I like the idea of the big socking station, means the robovac can clean more efficiently and not wait for me to empty it on a daily basis. Another thing, I thought our dog may be an issue but he is chilled with it, our oldest son loves it though. Always wanting to ‘clean’ and putting toys on for a ride…

So I went with the lame name of moptimus grime.

Then thought maybe Claptrap from borderlands would be cool.

My wife says why don't you use Craptrap.

I will marry her again later tonight.

Brilliant

Protip:

For side brushes and replacements:
If you find that the side brush wears out quickly via one of the brush arms or ferrule things breaking off over time, try spraying your new replacement with Q20 and leaving it for a few hours. Many plastics when sprayed with Q20 will absorb it and become incredibly tough at the expense of a tiny bit of rigidity. Perfect trade-off for side brushes.

It's an old trick I learned when building RC cars back in the day and I tried it on my 4 year old Mijia 1C vacuum which constantly suffered from broken side brushes.... the current sidebrush on it is so old that the bristles have started breaking off or wearing thin/short.

This is looking impressive. Will need to cough up a good few k though when it's released.

Any thoughts on this price I see today?

I think this thing might be a bit overkill but for my downstairs area but this could be lekker, really want to move my old 1C upstairs 'cause I'm getting gatvol of carrying it around all the time.

My old 1C just has the old "drag" mop thinjymajig but even that worked OK, so I'm assuming these round mops will do wonders on my tile and vinyl floors.

One issue is my place is fully managed with home assistant and I don't see official support when I google for it.
That could be a problem, would like to manage it using HA.

We went from a 1C to the S20+. The difference is night and day. The S20+ now now services the main house whilst the 1C now sorts a braai room ( security gate blocks it off from the main house )

I integrated the 1C into HA so that we could trigger it from an IR remote ( an ESP32 is involved ). But I don't / haven't had a need to pull the S20+ in yet. Like you said, there's no official integration yet. But this thread has had some success
