2007/2008 WI tour to SA thread

He was in the top 3 for most of his career.

I may be misinterpreting you but you appear to be implying he was on the slide anyway.... well as with team rankings your performances are weighted towards more recent performances, so not making the team for the last couple of tests would not have helped his current rating.....

He was at number 3 before they dropped him for Pakistan and New Zealand. He moved down the rankings because they dropped him.

Yep.

His bowling career is pretty similar to Glen McGrath's.
They used to be next to each other on the rankings.

Pity they dropped him, there was always talk of him becoming a number 6 batsmen at the end of his career and bowling part time, like Kallis.
We could've probably gotten 4 years of him at no 6 had they started that last year.
Think he could've averaged over 40 in that position.

these ranking are phucking stupid. how can you move down the table for effectively winning 1 - 0? this system is stupid. the player's ranking system is just as stupid. how can dale steyn be the world's number 2? you can't be the world's best bowler just cos you had a few good tests. you become the best over years of good, consistent performances. these ratings are phucked.

91 wickets in 18 tests...

See a prev post for team rankings, there's a few teams that are close.

how long has dale steyn been playing? a year maybe 2? how many matches? 18? let's look at glen mcgrath and then compare. how long has glen mcgrath been playing? how many matches has he played? yes dale is becoming a good bowler, but to rate him number 2 on this crazy system is, well, just crazy.

what's with the mcgrath comparison when he is not even in the rankings. the rankings are obvioulsy made to reflect more current form than anything else.

i'm using him as an example as he was number one for many, many years. you can say what you like, but the system is stoopid. if it reflects current form, then they should change the name to "Current Form Rankings".

When Mcgrath was playing they were ranked side by side for around 10 years, i'm saying polly was just as good.

Pretty sad when the 8th best test bowler and the best ODI bowler in the world is pushed into retiring by incompetant administrators... but i suppose we are used to this in SA!
He cited wanting to spend more time with his family as the reason and wanting to give new talent an opportunity to build for the next world cup but yeah, I'm sure being dropped hastened his retirement.

Sorry - meant to post direct links to the posts. Remember this? You seem to have a problem with the reality of various ranking systems and your perception of what things should be. :D

Steyn has taken five wickets in an innings on 8 recent occasions. Show me all the bowlers who have done better than that recently.

that post has nothing to do with ratings so i don't know what you're getting at with that. read ur last sentence - " Show me all the bowlers who have done better than that recently". that's not what the ratings should reflect. if you want to reflect this, it's called the "Form Table", meaning how well someone is performing lately. not overall.

That post was about your disagreement with the average posts here. It seems to be a similar problem to your problem with the average posts numbers here - ie It doesn't show what you'd like it to show.

That what all-time records are for - the ICC rankings show current form. Nobody is arguing that steyn is a better bowler than McGrath (yet) but his current form certainly is better than McGrath.

you're misunderstanding everything i'm saying. your next post is what i'm talking about.

it is showing nothing more than current form, rather than what the old system showed. think about how crazy this new system is. i play a few good matches, suddenly i'm the world's number 2. does that make sense to you?

It is *supposed* to show current form - where else would you look for that?

There is no old system, there are plenty of places that you cna rank bowlers according to number of wickets, avg, runs scored off, speed or any other way you might want to measure them.

I'm sorry that it doesn't work the way you'd like. :p

sigh. there was another system they used before to rate players and teams than the one they're using now. current form and overall rating are two different things. winning 10 out of 10 indicates best form recently, but overall, the team/player can be 5th on the log. that's the easiest way i can explain it.

No they aren't.

At the moment Steyn is performing amongst the best of the current Test bowlers. As was stated earlier, losing a test to a lower ranked nation, who are in very poor form and then winning two tests versus the same, weak opposition doesn't count for much.

They make perfect sense. :)
