2007 Cricket World Cup (West Indies) thread

Well Smith promised to win it next time. Hopefully by that time he'll be a demon captain like Ponting is now. But all in all the butterflies that built up over the past week were just killed in the 1st 10 overs of the game and it such an anticlimax. I just feel sorry for the guys when they get to JHB International because they probably gonna get a rough reception.
 
Ponting doesn't have to deal with a team plagued with quota issues. I think Biff has it a little tougher, I think he improved alot since he was appointed.
 
Next wc in asia - lets see how much priority sa cricket gives spinners over the next 4 years. Mumbles wont be in the hot seat for the final. lol
 
Well I guess we can look back and remember 6 6s, the England annihilation, the close match against Sri Lanka so at least theres lots of stuff that did go in our favour.
 
Hey look on the bright side - we got the Twenty20 WC coming up in SA later this year, we're gonna own everyone in that! None of this slow pitch crap :D

The only way a spinner will get in the side is if they are a quota player. SA don't see spinners as attacking bowlers :mad: which is really a problem. They will pick their best 3 fast bowlers, best 3 batsmen, best 2 all rounders and best keeper. Then they will try and fill the spaces with the quota players. Silly way to work things. If you look at the wicket tables back home, they are normally topped by spinners.
 
Is there a way that we all maybe sign a petition against this quota thing? If its still there when Asia 2011 comes round we're screwed.

Now at least there'll be a "2007 Twenty 20 World Cup Thread" soon to keep us goin hehe. And we'll also show the West Indies a thing or 2 about how to fill up grounds.:)
 
Yeah poor form from the Windies crowds. I think that '92, '99 and '03 were the best WC's in terms of atmosphere and attendance.

One thing we have that nobody else has is the Wanderers - no other ground has such deafening acoustics!
 
Yet again our team chokes when the pressure of the world cup is on. They couldn't handle it in 1996,1999,2003 and nothing changed in 2007.

When we needed our experienced batsmen to raise to the occasion they fall apart.

We need some big changes we need a strike bowler. Dale Steyn must play in the odi team.
 
I don't think Steyn would make much difference - we need somebody who can bowl 150+km/h. And we need a spinner who can significantly turn it both ways.

If you look at the other 3 teams who made the semis, they all have that - moreso for the finalists. The scary part is that they readily have replacements and we can't even find one.
 
Murali + Hogg = the 2 best spinners in the tournament and arguably the world. Key is they can turn it both ways like HGP says..

Dale Steyn can bowl 150 km/h. He has done it in the past. He might not bowl it consistently but he is quicker than any of these guys we had on this tour. He also swings the bowl at a quick pace. We had langeveld who swing the bowl but at medium speed it isn't going bother top batsmen consistently. Tait and Malinga have been great because they swung the ball at good pace.

The key is being able to bowl it consistently, along with a variety of slower balls. Steyn hovers around the 140km/h mark, with the odd bouncer reaching 150km/h. He just doesn't strike me as the sort of player who can place 4 out of 6 in the blockhole at 150km/h like Bond, Lee, Tait and Malinga can do.

But I guess he's probably the closest we have at the moment - I just think that they shouldn't chuck him into the team and expect him to perform only to drop him after 2 matches. He needs to be trained to consistently bowl fast. Also our twenty20 specialist batsmen need to be trained to prolong their style of batting over a 50-over period. Imagine the force we could be if Bosman, JP, Morkel etc could achieve this.

Personally I'd love to see Morkel in the team in place of Prince. I love how aggressive he can be.

Prince should have never bee in this wc squad in the first place he was picked on his test form. but I like Morkel or if they don't another big hitter in there and need to fill a quata Domiey of the cobras looks to have some talent.
