It was fun indeed BUT he came back and put in some awsome overs. Polly ended up going for 8.30 per over and no wicket, while McGrath pulled it back to 6.88 per over and even took a wicket. Also, look at how Bracken started...10 runs in his first over and the man ends up with an economy rate of 4.44 :eek:

C'mon guys, I am 100% behind this team and agree with some of the posts that this is our best chance ever, but some individuals ARE costing us this cup. Lets face it, Kallis IS one of the BEST out there, but look at Clarke and Ponting....they KNOW how to take the best attack apart and they DO it. Kallis always try to slow the game down to HIS liking but he puts so much pressure on the other guys. Polly and Kemp HAD to swing from the word go because our prima donna wanted to maintain his average of 50 plus. The scary thing is Kallis HAS the ability to take ANY attack apart too and he has shown glimpses, but then he has to pick his battles for the team. Getting a hundred against Holland counts for **** if he can't produce the goods against the big teams.

I'd also like to briefly touch on the bowling again. Why does Hall, who has to fight for his place EVERY time, have to show Ntini and Langevelt up with some awesome death bowling? I mean, Watson stepping away from his wicket and flipping Langevelt over fine leg for 10 runs off 3 balls in the same over? What happened to "death bowling" and "if u miss I hit"?? Langevelt is not an inexperienced bowler. Ntini too, Clarke hits him for a six and a 4 in over 46! This is the time for yorkers :mad:

Then there is the lack of variety in the attack, i.e. the lack of a quality spinner! And please, lets not imagine Peterson is a spinner, he is there to fill up the quota, plain and simple. Even Johan Botha would have done better. You just had to see Hogg's 3/61 to see what a quality spinner can do.

Next up is Sri Lanka. Just see what Muralitharan and Jayasuria will do to us.

Exactly, we could've afforded to lose his wicket if he'd taken some risks and hit the ball a bit, what you can't afford is to have him standing there doing nothing while the run rate climbs.
 
Another question is Kemp. when was the last time he actually performed with the bat OR ball? I mean really now, do we need a non-performer like that o could we have just put peterson in his place and shift the batting lineup up one. Atleast there will be an option of variance in bowling.
 
Kemp needs some time to get started before letting loose, we all know that. They can't keep sending him in with 30 balls remaining. You can't really blame him for underperforming when he's not being utilised correctly. He should have come in at 3 with Gibbs at 4, or Gibbs at 3 with Kemp at 4. The difference between Kemp and Kallis is that Kemp will increase his strike rate once he gets in, Kallis will improve his strike rate once he passes 50.
 
fair enough, but why has he not bowled ? I mean he couldn't have been as bad as polly and ntini, plus he varies it a bit at least. Its like smith totally forgot about him
 
That's just it, Kemp isn't being used properly so we can't really put the blame on him for not performing.

Also Ponting swapped his bowlers around ALOT. I think he rotated them in 2 over spells. Even if you don't have variation in your attack, you can still rotate the bowlers frequently so that the batsmen don't get a chance to adjust to each bowler before creaming them.
 
Daryl Cullinan and Jacques Kallis has shown that talent and ability amounts to **** if character and fighting spirit is gone.

But why were they put under that pressure? If SA were 20/3 then it would have been the right move to send in Kallis, but SA were 220/1 with a power play to go. When was the last time Kallis hit over the top at the beginning of his innings? You need a Kallis in the side for those times when stability is required. If Kallis had tried to play over the top stuff, he would probably have gone out. That may not have been a problem if someone else had stepped up and got a big innings but he should not have been in there in the first place. The problem is, first and foremost, there is no flexibility in the side. Hell, Polly has 3 expensive overs so take him off. Cricket is not about going through a step by step plan.

Look what happened against India in the C/Town test. Brains trust decided "lets do something different and send in Polly while the ball is hard" and we ended up winning the game. That is what is needed if you want to win games. Look at the situation and adapt.

What happened is that Kallis went in and started building his innings. The pressure that put on the other batsmen to get quick runs got them out. Let me give you an alternate:

1) Put in Polly then Gibbs (if required) for the last power play. Polly gets a quick 40 off 20 balls and the game is almost won. Gibbs comes in and plays a nice sensible 60 off 50 balls........
2) Put in Polly then Gibbs for the last power play. Both go out quickly/cheaply so now you need to rebuild. In goes Kallis and Boucher and start a proper rebuild. Because both players are playing for a big innings, they both end up getting 70-80 off 65 balls. Both would have been careful together and we would have had a fair chance at still winning at the end with wickets in hand.

A coach is there to look at the game situation and adapt not just blindly go where no coach is dumb enough to go. Kallis has a role in the side, just not the role they expected him to play. You don't open the bowling with AB and then say it's all his fault when he gets hit for 25 in the first over.

The problem is that Kallis is completely unable to change his game at all. This is a major handicap.
 
there's 147m peeps in Bangladesh, its a matter of time before they become a really strong cricketing country...
 
Well people used to write Bangladesh off saying that they shouldn't be playing in the world cup in the first place. Sri Lanka were minnows in the early 80's too with people saying that they shouldn't be playing, and now they're one of the top teams.

I say give the minnows a chance, expose them to strong teams. It's the only way for the game to grow internationally and raise the levels of interest in it. I'm glad that Ireland and Bangladesh are through.

I was initially against the idea of those minnows playing but after Ireland and Bangladesh, it's good to see they are through. Though the thought of Ireland playing their 10th or so ODI with a bunch of part timers beating Pak does not sound very realistic.

ICC should set up a B league for tests and ODI's (like the tournament they had a few months ago). This is a better way than to let the likes of the Netherlands and Bermuda play the largest teams. Minnow teams should play in qualifiers and let 4 or so of them to play in the WC.
 
IMO this past weekend's game against AUS showed us that we cannot afford to have 2 players in the top order with low strike rates, (Kallis and Prince) we have to have Kallis in the team as he has proved over the years what he can do.

That leaves Prince, they should look at either Loots Bosman at that position for a straight Batsmen swap, or it gives them an opportunity to bring in Robin Peterson lower down the order and bump up the rest of the guys, should take care of our spinner issues as well.

kalis going out would have been the best thing to have happened in the game

once again kallis's lack of 1 day batting screwed us big time

i think he either step up to plate and play a 1 day game or he must just play 5 day games

the reason the aussies do so well is because nobody bats slowly

it sickened me watching kallis bat like we only had to get 250
