2007 NZ tour to SA thread

By your argument failing in 1 test makes you inconsistent.

I remember at least a couple of games where Kallis did not score runs.

So then he must also labeled as inconsistent? yes/no

we're not just talking about 1 test. let me put it to u this way...kallis is more consistent than smith. look at how well he performs, especially lately.

Smith will have a bad SA tour as always. But its to late to remove him off his captaincy.
Sour grapes because the Pakis Lost?????? Just typical of You!
We all know your take on Smith and the South African team as a whole and no they will not remove him unless he become a quota victims by your's interference. I wonder what your opinion is about Amla and WHY? :D

OK I gotta give props to Amla and Kallis, with 2 down at the end of Day 2 they really batted well. It was a flippin' awesome win but yeah NZ were really feeling the pinch of their injuries.

And the whole Smith story, yeah he started his career off slow, picked up again, dropped, picked up...you get the point. I think you just gotta leave him be, I still think he has the makings of a (spit) Ricky Ponting as a captain.

Thats not what I am saying, I am not speaking about quotas and selection issues.

In my opinion the team that Pollock led was stronger than the team that Smith led. Not so much at the moment, with all the bowlers coming through.

But if you look closely at the teams of the past, and I am going further back now than just the Pollock as captain era. We always had a solid pace bowling attack with Donald and Pollock and before that De Villiers. Those guys gave us many a test victory.

If Donald played under Smith, then I am sure his win/lose % would be different.

We have not had someone in the class of Donald for a long time. Our bowling was far below par the last couple of years, and it is only now that our bowling is up to international standards again.

.

I have to disagree with you there. The Pollock / Ntini bowling partnership under Smith(early in his carreer) was until recently (maybe 2 years back)rated as the best opening attack bowlin pair in the world. IMO Ntini is a way better bowler than Donald was(don't have time now to go searching for stats, but I reckon the figures will bear this theory out). And the same goes for Pollock who could bat on top of that.
Smith has had the talent available, his leadership in steering the team has just been lacking.

Hehehe such warm replies!!

Nah no grapes, Smith has problems playing consistently well in front of his home crowd... My opinion.
They shouldnt remove him.... its too late.... Oh wait I said that already...
My opinion of Amla is he's good, IMO won the game for SA, but a partenership works both ways so Kallis also get some credit.

He does not always have a bad home series.

To late for what?

And who would be captain in his place?

To late to replace him, I said it again wow...
Not gonna start the who should be captain thing again.

i wouldn't want graeme to be removed as captain. as i said before, i think he's the right man for the job.

Ye might aswell leave him. Sooner or later he wont be the right man for the job and everyone will say why it wasnt done before.

SA will take this, I saw the stats yesterday when Bond plays VS when Bond not playing.... lol without him NZ is nothing.... weird stats.

Are you serious Ntini better than Donald?

Ok Donald played 72 tests and took 330 wickets, at an average of 22.25 and a strike rate of 47 and economy of 2.83

Ntini has played 78 tests for 316 wickets, at average of 27.65 and a strike rate of 51.5 and economy of 3.22

So the stats does not prove Ntini better than Donald.

Did you ever see Donald bowl? Did you see Pollock bowl when he started?

You can not compare the Pollock of the 90's with the Pollock of today. period.

Yeah, I am sure its nothing to do that he looks a lot like a Paki! :D

Just that was one good score from Amla, Yes but he did not fair so well lately so why only attack, Smith. We can see through you mate!

Thats a very important part of the argument in my opinion. There must be a captain. So if not Smith, then who?

Donald was our best test bowler... ever!

yip. also just think back to when Donald played. the batsmen were scared to face him. i don't think the same could be said for ntini. having said that, ntini is a fantastic bowler and he has much more to offer.

Fair enough, but when the day comes when Smith is replaced as captain you can remember this post!:)

I dont think he will captain Proteas in the 2011 WC...

The fact that we have this debate every time shows Smiths inconsistency hurting the team.
Good captains from the past were good from the beginning!!

Look how bad Michael Vaughn was for England :|

At least we have a captain that scores runs and wins matches. Take away his captaincy and he is still more than good enough to make the SA team.

from Donald's cricinfo page:

If the credit for South Africa's success in the modern era could be given to one player, that cricketer would be Allan Donald. A classical action and top-drawer pace would have won him a place in any side in his prime, and for much of his career he was the only world-class performer in the South African team, spearing the ball in, shaping it away and always making things happen. His strike rate was below 50 in Tests and close to 30 in one-day internationals. Inevitably, he was over-bowled and the injuries began to accumulate in the twilight of his career. He quit Test cricket after breaking down in the crushing defeat by Australia at Johannesburg in 2001-02, retired from ODIs a year later, after South Africa's exit from the 2003 World Cup, and from all cricket a year later as his physical deterioration accelerated. Of Afrikaans stock, Donald speaks English with a slight Birmingham accent - at least, to South African ears - picked up during his lengthy spell as Warwickshire's overseas professional, a role he filled with distinction. No living South African player, past or present, commands as much respect from the public and his peers as Donald, the first bowler from his country to take 300 Test wickets.

He doesnt look Pakis at all, he looks South African muslim.

One good score? Well you proved my point, he plays well but never gets any accolades for it... he saved SA quite a few times now, Ill count that 2nd innings as saving SA again.

Never taught Smith has was it takes, and still he hasnt proved me wrong, so why should I change my mind and support the guy?

Well you cant look through anything if your eyes are closed.

read what i was talking about and then u would know

Either way, he scored 133 and then averaged 37.6 in his other 3 innings in Pakistan. That's far from a failure as an opening batsmen.
