2008’s most downloaded games

I would love to see console games stats... because there is no piracy on consoles.. :D

Edit:
But I think lots of people try before buy too. How many of these games has demos?

Will Wright, who must be wandering what he did wrong in a previous life...

I believe it's wondering... Sorry, pet peeve.

Anyway, hundreds of thousands of downloads kinda blows that whole 'piracy doesn't hurt the industry' argument right out of the water.

EA (stupid DRM or not, and I agree that it was stupid, EA) lost close to $85,000,000 on Spore due to the illegal downloads. Yes, it was a vindictive reaction to a stupid DRM strategy, and (take note EA) it proves very succinctly just how worthless DRM actually is. I suspect lots of people downloaded it just to prove the point.

The part that saddens me more is that people went and downloaded an awesome game like Fallout 3, which really does deserve your money. 650,000 copies lost them $23,500,000. I'd like to know how that stacks up to the actual sales figures...

I'm sure most people that download games wouldn't necessarily buy them if they had to pay for it, so saying they lost 'so much' and 'so much' money doesn't make sense.

I like to buy games i enjoy, but this whole DRM thing has seriously put me off. With the negative feelings about DRM i expected Spore`s figure to be much higher just to make a point!

I wanted to buy Far Cry2, Mass effect to name a few, but i seriously don`t want their DRM Securom crap, so if i do end up buying it i`ll download a crack anyway to bypass their crap

I have Fallout 3 sitting on my hdd, haven't even touched it yet. Don't think I will. Not cause the game sucks, but cause I play WoW mostly.

I just thought I'd grab it in case. So, not every single download translates into a sale lost imho.

Hehe. I love it that Spore is #1. It was one big DRM mess.

And check what management's solution will be now to fix this: Add more DRM!

Now with "spore2" you'll only be allowed to install it once! Haha! Got you now pirates! Didn't think of that did you!

I bought Crysis Warhead a few months back and installed it, it worked for about two weeks until the DRM software started giving issues and locked my game, I have since tried my best to call EA, send them e-mails btw. their South African number in the manual does not work!

Eventually after Rage a guy from EA contacted me with a whole bunch of questions, I answered all questions in a reply and no one has helped me since, I still can't play my game.

My only avenue is to pirate the game now. I hope that the lawsuit against EA in the US is successful, because DRM just ruins it for the honest folk out there as the pirates are not affected by it in any way.

Pirates just download and play.

I go buy game, install, activate game, might crash, play for two weeks then bans my game.

I do not condone piracy in any way, I have not pirated a game in 10 years and will never pirate again, if you don't agree with the game then just don't buy it, show your disgust in that way and not by piracy. Because piracy only indicated to the publishers and developers that people play the games without paying and in the end of the day they ruin the experience for the honest folk.

I also think that piracy has become some kind of addiction to people as it is just too easy to get things for free.

So I plead with people in this forum to respect others and don't pirate, by not pirating you are sending a message of honesty to these companies.

Please do not pirate as you will eventually ruin it for the PC gaming industry.

If I with my bad experiences can still walk the straight and narrow then you can too. The only problem I see now is that if Piracy declines the big publishers will say that DRM succeeded in curbing piracy which is not the case, so in essence pirates have already ruined the PC gaming industry.

Well at least Lord of the Rings - Online is still working and I can play that.

I'm phoning Sony as I type this to inform them that they missed one, as soon as they get around to implementing it, you will require SecuROM in order to access the Lord of the Rings Online server. Take that pirates! Got you again!

I can download games?
torrentfreak? im googling torrent freak right now. oh its a piracy website.
look they have all this stuff for free? let me see what I can get my hands on.
cool, now I've been made aware of a technology that gives me the option to pirate.

Seriously,
I don't think articles like this should be publicized.

Strange that the top pirated game is for kids, and the 2nd most pirated one is for girls

Kids and girls are obviously the best pirates, cause they don't read sites and forums with articles and threads that call their morales into question.

Freedom hating communist.

Saying they lost x amount of sales is incorrect, they lost potential sales yes. They could have made x amount of money, if you couldn't download a game and couldn't buy it either they still lost the potential sale

I want to see sales vs piracy numbers...then u can thoroughly determine which game made the biggest impact...but this once again proves how dumb computer gamers are...killing the industry they apparently enjoy

This article isn't written very well. Staff writer, heres a few writing tips...

when you introduce DRM you should define it, not everyone is aware of it. Also you have used the wrong words in some places, which has been pointed out already.

With regards to the article though, and the sales vs piracy, didn't rockstar take one week to make like 5 times what it cost them to make GTA4?? (console release) Surely if they are making so much in one weekend, all these games are still selling a hell of a lot more copies than are being downloaded.
