2008 Smartphone Roundup

sadly all 3 of those phones listed have a carp resolution when compared to the HTC touch Pro which runs at 640 x 480 if memory serves.

E71 tops for me.. the bloody thing just works

really...the iPhone cant really be in the 'Smartphone' class, it's a freakin fashion statement and that's all there is to it...
X1, Omnia or HTC Touch Pro should be in the top 3... pfft, silly

I'd concur with the phones and places awarded in this article.

A fair number of people I know use all three of these phones and they do seem to end up with the Nokia, as a smart, business phone.

I've used all these phones quite extensively, including the X1, Omnia and the latest HTC models, and currently switch between the Bold and the iPhone with personal preference leaning towards the Bold. If the iPhone had a decent keyboard (and SMS forwarding), it would be the no. 1 choice.

Won't you define 'Smartphone' class for us and explain how the iPhone fail at being a smartphone?

And don't forget to add 'Responsiveness' as a category, the one area, BTW, where all three the WM phones you listed suffer.

The iPhone is a great phone, but it has one major shortcoming that should basically exclude it from these types of "contests": forced exclusivity to one service provider.

Does the iPhone come with any productivity applications?

Edit: This seems to be quite a popular debate, see Google.

Sad excuse, exclusivity cant be a factor. The phone is available in SA so its a contender.

Yes! I would say it has the best applications ive ever used on any phone. The apps makes the phone one of the best on the market!

I HAD the E71 until it was stolen last week. :o

I don't think there is an industry definition for Smart Phone, so it doesn't really matter what you answer here - vodacom3g will probably disagree as his definition is likely closer to his opinion. That said, I think you're defining a business enabled smart phone. I do believe that every smart phone can have different applications.

It's only available at a) a higher price than most of the other offerings and b) if you're willing to move to Vodacom. Unless you want to buy the phone outright , so yes, this is very much a factor that should be taken into consideration.

Another really unbiased smartphone report.

LOL ... well said .. this staff writer is VERY slanted towards the E71 .. which in my opinion is almost useless with such a poor display .. editing excell spreadsheets or word documents are practically impossible compared to the resolution offered on the Touch Pro or X1 .. and web browsing must be doddle on these great displays too ...

Id hazard a guess as to say this staff writer owns an E71 and is trying desperately to find reasons why he bought it ...
