2008 Smartphone Roundup

LOL ... well said .. this staff writer is VERY slanted towards the E71 .. which in my opinion is almost useless with such a poor display .. editing excell spreadsheets or word documents are practically impossible compared to the resolution offered on the Touch Pro or X1 .. and web browsing must be doddle on these great displays too ...

Id hazard a guess as to say this staff writer owns an E71 and is trying desperately to find reasons why he bought it ...
Hehe. Or the "staff writer" is on holiday and too lazy to do more research :D

The iPhone is a great phone, but it has one major shortcoming that should basically exclude it from these types of "contests": forced exclusivity to one service provider.
+1

Vodacom3G would obviously push his(or rather companies) phone, very expensive phone I might add :p.

All that aside, I do feel that there are a few phones missing, at least one of the WM phones should be there... Omni or X1 or HTC Touch Pro. Not even a mention, nice "unbiased" article yet again...

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. I will add that I have had the least amount of issues with my nokia, than all my previous smart phones... ;) Features and productivity set aside..

Ill agree the s60 OS is very fast and "stableish". Dont get me wrong .. Ive had my fair share of reboots in the middle of phone calls, but with smartphones packed with a "bigger than your average phone punch" this can happen when multitasking excessively.

With that said .. i really cant understand how a completely keyboard driven phone is even considered as a really good smartphone.. the Blackberrys have a trackball .. the other devices are touchscreen .. I challenge anyone to VNC to a user desktop without a stylus and get something done in a reasonable time...

Also to comment on the IPhone (and I'm REALLY not an IPhone fan) .. it is probably the only device to work seamlessly with PC and Mac .. and that REALLY should count for something ..

I am a Sony fan through and through .. and although Ive had my share of problems, my trusty m600i hasnt needed a reboot for over 6 months now and has become an absolute livesaver when away from my desk (albeit with Opera mini and not the standard browser .. but the standard excell, word, Ppt, Mail, and not standard VNC functions are a perfect lifeline when in need) .. If MTN could just get their act together Id have had my X1 by now .. then all I'd need after that is about 3 firmware updates and it should be usable ..... ;)

But if I was being unbiased .. having used 1 .. the Bold would have to take it for me .. its sleek and yet an absolute powerhouse .. if I wasnt so partial to SE .. Bold would be my next bet ...

More Vodacom punting :
"For R69 a month on Vodacom, users can take advantage of unlimited data on their BlackBerry Bold. This includes emailing, web browsing and GPS usage."

Not really.

I've been using 'smart phones' from before many of you were allowed to have a phone, smart or not. :) My first 'smartphone' was a Compaq iPaq with the GSM sleeve, circa 10 years ago. Still got it.

Since then I had most of the HTC WM phones (long before they were called HTC, from the Qtek 1010 onwards) and most of the other 'smart phones' as they came out. Always been a big Nokia fan, so had most of them as well. Looking in my cupboard, I see 2 x Nokia 6600's, one of the first decent 'smart phones' from Nokia. Used to run a full real-time, voice navigation app on them. Pretty 'smart' for the time.

I'd suggest all the people commenting on the different phones here (and on the web) should maybe first post how much hands-on time they had with each phone before giving their opinions. That way we can all be sure the comments are based on actual, real-world experience.

While I currently don't use the Nokia, enough people I know who have all three tend to put it ahead of the Bold and iPhone.

I currently switch between the Bold and iPhone (whichever one is charged) as I really like the iPhone's UI and the App Store but I really like the Bold's keyboard and the fact that I can forward a SMS.

@vodacom3g:

Being a vodacom representative certainly gives you some say, innit?

I've been using smart phones for a very very long time. I don't feel like listing them all, as that really boils down to who has a bigger cock type thing.

I do feel that my and many of the other people's opinions do count - irrespective of who you think you are.

The first "smartphone" I used was a Motorola ion late 90's, was bigger than my hand and I have big hands and was monochrome, cannot find the model number on the net and cannot remember the model :(

He has a point, if you havent used the phone, your comments arent really fair...

I said that if you, me or anyone else want to comment on a specific phone, it makes sense to tell us about your ACTUAL experience with the device.

Surely that makes sense?

You'll notice I gave no views on the E71, (aside from the fact that others seem to like it), as I've not used one for any extended period of time. So I'm not qualified to comment on it.

And your long list of past *smart* phones was for what? Show?

I have the iPhone and the wife has a bold. I also have the Omnia and quite frankly it kicks the cr@p out of the iPhone. Enough cred for you now?

Why so aggressive?

Go back and read my response to ASS_SAZiN's post. I was trying to highlight that I'm not 'pushing' Vodacom's exclusive smart-phones (as was implied) but rather have been using smart phones for many years. And I buy them, BTW.

There are a few things that bothers me about the Omnia:

- The lack of response when using the GIU. Every click seems to take just a little bit too long to actually initiate the required action. It's like the CPU is underpowered to drive the GUI.
- You need to be quite heavy handed with the touch screen. Probably not a problem if you only use the device but every time you switch from the iPhone to the Omnia (or X1 or Diamond), it feels like you're pressing too hard on the screen and it's going to get damaged.
- The fancy GUI wrapper they wrote for all these phones is just that. An attempt to give a BB / iPhone type GUI, but the next click you're back in the old WM screens.
- The dangling stylus on the Omnia. At least on the other stylus-based phones the stylus has a little slot to house it. On the Omnia it hangs on a string. Weird.

Otherwise the Omnia, X1 and Diamond are probably the best we're going to see from WM-based smart phones, until we get a fully revamped OS. But it seems like WM 7 is still pretty much the same.

No one mentioned Vodacom exclusive

The Iphone I used was a Vodacom one and any person in SA can get one either through Vodacom or Importing it. I think the views here are based on user preference and not who sells them

And I agree with you, the topic is the Best SmartPhones in 2008.

Sorry I missed that, was reading the quote you added :o

But I agree the Iphone is good. I just prefer the Omnia. Which Vodacom sells also mind you :) My first samsung and I can only say that if all the Samsung's are this good I missed out with my use of Nokia's an Motorola's :D

I quite liked the Samsung i780, a 'Blackberry' type chassis with a great screen, running WM. When the Omnia/X1/Diamond came out, I was just about first in line as we (myself, not Vodacom) developed some nice software for WM to do Home Automation. So a WM, touch-screen phone seemed the most logical next step.

But the reality with WM is that it was king of the roost for so many years and maybe this got MS complacent and gave the RIM's and Apple's of the world time to catch up. And they've definitely done this in the GUI department.

The other (unexpected) thing Apple did was with the App Store. While not a new concept, they raised the bar in putting a single store down (on your desktop) with very affordable apps (typically 99c) which are extremely easy to access. No need to Google and search for apps like with WM. Plug your iPhone in and all the available apps appear on your desktop.

RIM is rushing to get their version out. With WM, there are huge numbers of apps out there. But you must still search for them and then buy from a number of different places. And typically at 10's of Dollars.

Hehe, I was making a joke about you and vodacom, vodacom3G hence the little :p at the end, as far as using smart phones before I were allowed to bollocks I can't see how that fact can make you a better judge on a phone than anyone else.

When I take a look at my desk drawer, I see 1X 6600, N70, HTC Touch, nokia 6210 Navigator and HTC Touch Pro. Now I didn't say that I have worked with the nokia e71 although I know people who has had the phone, nor black berry or iPhone.

I think one important point is that the topic is Smartphone roundup 2008, is it too much to ask to have one single windows mobile phone included in a "roundup"? I know the touch Pro is an awesome phone, and that is all I was hinting at, we need to include more phones in this type of article...

I can list quite a few aspects where the Touch Pro would, beat all of the phones listed, hands down!!
