2009 ICC Champions Trophy

Yup i cannot see how cramp is a symptom of poor fitness.

I would think changing weather conditions could be a very big cause, hot 28-30 degree day and night falls and it drops in temp big time.

It's hardly related to fitness. Strauss was talking k@k when he said that it is. Cramp can affect any cricketer at any time. Smith was in the field all day when it was hot, and then batted through the entire innings when it was much cooler. How many other cricketers in the match have had to do the same? How would you guys explain AB and Gibbs cramping up? They must be unfit too

Maybe he's pregnant?

Anyway its not Strauss fault...

Maybe Smith is over weight?
Strauss is not a doctor.
Smith might be overweight, or it may just be his build. Who cares, he's been passed fit to play. He's certainly much fitter than Inzi, who couldn't run if a lion was snatching at his balls.

If Strauss isn't a doctor then he shouldn't speak as if he is one.

I don't get it AB got cramps as well. Wonder if strauss thinks he is also unfit and / or overweight.

Ps JK8 refuses to answer this question so maybe one of the others that are upholding smith got cramps because of weight / fitness issuess would care to explain?

AB has a blood disorder and low blood pressure and a troublesome thyroid gland.

Strauss is an ass, end off, anyone heard Darren Scott's prank call to him yesterday morning requesting to fix his curtain runner in the hotel room? lol

Yeah, link please anyone? :D

I know the tournament is kind of soured for us all now but I am still hoping for the Black Caps to give the Poms a smack this afternoon :D ... weather permitting of course.

I would love to see SL go through! :D

I think england will throw this game, they do not want sri lanka to come back and bit em.

I would throw this game if i was the england captain.

Ian Bell and Marcus Trescothick while playing for england have required runners due to cramp. I wonder if Strauss reckons they are unfit as well.

Not like England will make it past the semis.
How many points for a draw should the game be washed out?

Two contradicting feelings there:

If NZ beat England, NZ and England go through.
If England beat NZ, England and SL go through.

Explain why a footballer who is super fit also fails victim to cramp then?

I am not convinced cramped is due to lack of fitness.

...because they are fatigued after running a real 8-11km in sprints.

Wikipedia is not a scientific source of information. Try referencing that to your Uni assignment.:erm:

Wikipedia contributors get their scientific information on this from the Gatorade laboratory.

The Science of Sport guys down at SSISA...Dr Ross Tucker et al have debunked the common man in street theories about cramp being due to sodium, temperature etc...in fact because sweat is more dilute than plasma in sodium, the plasma concentration goes up not down as you sweat.

This is what they said in their report this morning:

The fact of the matter is that a cramp is NOT an injury. Andrew Strauss was 100% correct to deny the runner - maybe he knows something the SA team apparently doesn't (maybe he even reads The Science of Sport), because he must know that a cramp is primarily caused by a lack of fitness and conditioning, where the fatigued muscle goes into spasm, possibly as a result of reflex neural stimulation.

and:

Some say that electrolyte loss (particularly sodium) is the cause, despite the fact that no evidence exists for this, and no one has ever managed to show that people who cramp are deficient in anything (either fluids or electrolytes).

.....amongst others.

Have a read of their series on cramp...the only cause during activity is fatigue and fatigue is managed through either endurance training or pacing yourself during the activity or both...but it comes down to being fatigued before you have completed your activity.

Smith cramped because he got fatigued during a long innings. That is a fact that has to be accepted as part of batting long...it may happen and the only way to avoid it if you happen to be someone prone to it is to get even fitter.
So Strauss is right and you guys are wrong.

...but don't argue with me, argue with Drs Ross Tucker, Tim Noakes, Jonathan Dugas etc etc

...but it does help that I have been running marathons, national level at one stage, for 30 yrs and have a Biochem degree.

cheers
